Land Rover is building a new Discovery. It is not a standard redesign since the company is going to use the new platform. What’s more, the company announced a longer life of the battery pack in the PHEV model. The 2020 Land Rover Discovery will be able to run 50 miles by using only electric power. We will see if the new platform will help Land Rover achieve this high expectation. The release date is set for this summer.

JLR company has big plans with its entire fleet. By 2022 all models will be new. We already saw Range Rover Evoque, and the 2020 Land Rover Discovery is the next to enter the new generation. After that, we will see all other well-known Land Rover and Range Rover SUV. The new platform is moving to the Premium Transverse Architecture. Mid-size SUV will get more space inside the cockpit. Also, the PTA will boost handling and maneuvering. Info about the engine lineup and specs is not available yet. Engineers are still considering which units to keep for the 2020 Discovery.

Premium Transverse Architecture

The new Premium Transverse Architecture will allow all future models to add a hybrid, plug-in, or EV drivetrain, or to improve existing. It comes with a 48 Volt support right from the start, and next 2020 Land Rover Discovery will take advantage of it in the mid-size segment. We already see the PTA making cool things for Evoque compact SUV. Now, it is time for larger units. Well, this architecture is part of the larger Modular Longitudinal Platform. As one of the most recognizable rear-wheel drive model in the lineup, the new Discovery will be lighter and more agile.

Technology Upgrade

The new 2020 Land Rover Discovery is not going to be only lighter and equipped with an electric drivetrain. Now, the MLA platform brings more futuristic features, according to announcements. We can hear that the new SUV could bring 5G network connectivity and more voice commands. We will see if the JLR is going to add some self-driving functions.

2020 Land Rover Discovery Specs

Current Discovery offers both petrol and diesel engines. Hybrid and possibly plug-in or all-electric unit could join the lineup. Further options include four and six-cylinder drivetrains, rear- and all-wheel drive. There are four engines in the lineup and all of them are turbocharged. The base model is getting power from a 2.0-liter petrol engine with 300 hp. With it, the SUV can sprint to 60 mph in 7.7 seconds. Max speed is 125 mph. A larger petrol engine is a 3.0 displacement that adds 40 hp. With it, SUV increases the top speed to 133 mph and takes 7 seconds for 0-60 mph.

Diesel engines are the same displacements. Of course, these units create less power, but more torque. From a 2.0 diesel engine, we can squeeze 240 hp. It achieves higher top speed than its petrol sibling (+3 mph) but needs more time to get to 60 mph (1 second). A 3.0-liter displacement can be either turbo- or supercharged. The first one produces 260 hp, sprints 0-60 mph in 8 seconds, and achieves 130 mph. Supercharger will increase the power output to 306 hp and 0-60 time to 7.5 seconds. Max speed remains the same – 130 mph.

Whichever engine you pick, there will be five trim levels waiting for the further building. The entry-level 2020 Land Rover Discovery S offers 19-inch wheels, black grille surrounding, 10-inch touchscreen display, and heated outside mirrors. Cloth grille and six-speaker audio system will be upgraded with higher trim levels. The SE model adds wipers with sensors for rain, park assist, and navigation.

Landmark Edition of the 2020 Land Rover Discovery will continue to use 20-inch wheels and special badges. More exterior options are available with Dynamic suite. Meridian is upgrading the audio system. HSE models come with unique Atlas grille and a rearview camera. Keyless functions are added, as well as leather seats and Pro Navigation. Top of the line is HSE Luxury pack with some signature features. LED lights, Style 1011 wheels, electric moonroof, 14 speakers of Meridian audio, and three-zone climate are just some of the upgrades you get with this model.

2020 Land Rover Discovery Price

The price of the new 2020 Land Rover Discovery will be modified thanks to the new platform. However, we expect the base model to cost the same as before. That is around $52,000. But, opting for each trim level and larger engine adds a value. HSE will start around $60k and Luxury package adds $3,000 more. We still don’t know the price for the plug-in model and its trim levels. We could see this one goes above $60,000 and if it gets a HSE package, then even $70,000 is not impossible. Well, fans will know more in a couple of months. The 2020 Discovery debut is happening in the summer. However, sales will start in the last quarter of the year.
