The 2020 Ford Expedition is not going to be the largest SUV in the lineup for too much longer. The company is going to return the Excursion, based on the heavy-duty F-250 truck. Until we see this model in dealerships, Expedition and Expedition MAX will be SUVs that will offer the most space inside the cabin. The three-row model is preparing big updates for the new season.
One of the certain things that will happen is a diesel engine. Ford is not confirming it yet. But, this SUV is based on the F-150 truck, that is coming with such drivetrain. However, we are still waiting for the company to announce a Power Stroke unit for the 2020 Ford Expedition. Besides that, the vehicle could go greener. Electrification is ongoing in the Blue Oval family. A lot of models will get hybrid, PHEV, and EV models in the next couple of years. Again, the SUV will benefit again from its relation with the most popular truck in the market, since it is at top of priorities for electrification.
Besides the mechanical updates, the new SUV is not going to suffer big cosmetic changes. Minor updates of the interior and exterior are on the way. Also, the company will revisit the trim levels and add more features across the lineup. Still, the base model will probably be unchanged. If you need extra space, Expedition MAX adds 15 inches for more room for passengers or cargo.
2020 Ford Expedition Specs
While we are waiting for updates about diesel and hybrid engines, one drivetrain is certain. That is a high-output variant of the 3.5-liter V6 engine. A twin-turbo system makes this powertrain deliver 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. Some models in the lineup will be able to achieve even more power (+25 hp and +10 lb-ft). A 10-speed transmission is new and it can handle so much energy. Buyers will choose between 4×2 and 4×4 drive system. The new 2020 Ford Expedition will use more light materials in its body, so we can count on fuel economy boost. MAX model will consume slightly more fuel. Expect the base model with 21 mpg combined. Properly equipped, the SUV can tow up to 9,300 pounds.
These numbers will go above 10k if the 2020 Ford Expedition Diesel shows up in dealerships. Besides the better towing capacity, the Power Stroke unit will improve the fuel economy. A 3.0-liter turbodiesel drivetrain will be capable to produce 250 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque. We will see if Ford is going to pair it with a 10-speed transmission, or some other gearbox. Expect average fuel economy to jump to 23-24 mpg.
Even better fuel economy numbers are coming with a hybrid drivetrain. Well, we can say the diesel is coming since the 2020 Ford Expedition will be a very close sibling to F-150 truck. But, this pickup is still not offering a hybrid engine. Yes, there are intentions to develop such drivetrain, but this is not going to happen so fast. At least, the intention is there. When the F-150 gets such a source of energy, the Expedition SUV will follow the lead. In the foreseeable future, we could see these big rigs with some mild-hybrid systems. However, the real deal is not going to work before 2021.
2020 Ford Expedition MAX
The new SUV will keep its dimensions. That means the overall length stays at 210 inches with a wheelbase of 122.5 in. Well, if you need more space, the 2020 Ford Expedition MAX adds 11 inches for wheelbase and 8.5 inches overall. This extension is not going to harm maneuvering and handling. Yes, drivers will need some time to gel with the larger vehicle. Extra length is going to be used for interior storage. Ford is not going to change the layout of seats. However, the cargo area gains 15 cubic feet behind the third row. Expedition MAX offers 36 cubic feet behind the last row, 73 cubic feet behind the middle row, and 121 cubic feet of storage space with the second and third row folded. Well, the total towing capacity will drop by 300 pounds. The 2020 Expedition MAX can haul 9,000 pounds.
2020 Ford Expedition Release Date and Price
Ford will wait for the green light from the EPA for its diesel engine. The premiere of the new Expedition SUV will also be TBA. This will be the biggest change for the next season, so the Blue Oval company is not going to rush. The preview of a 2020 Ford Expedition Diesel could happen earlier, but the sales are not starting before we see the F-150 truck in dealerships.
The base price of the SUV remains the same. A 4×2 model is available for $50,000. Expedition MAX adds around $3,000. Diesel engine upgrade will cost $3k as well. If the Expedition hybrid appears, that will be the more serious investment.
