The current generation of the amazing SUV has been around for a full decade. So it’s no wonder that we can find lots of reports about its redesign. According to the latest reports, the next generation of this capable mid-size SUV is about to come in less than a year, as 2020 Lexus GX.
Although most manufacturers put crossovers in the focus, Toyota will also keep going with old-school, off-road capable body-on-frame SUVs, which became pretty exotic vehicles these days. These reports also suggest that the 2020 Lexus GX will come almost at the same time as its more affordable, mainstream sibling, the 4Runner.

According to them, Toyota prepares a completely new platform, which will underprint a plethora of new-generation trucks and SUVs. One of the expected benefits is significant weight reduction. Some of the reports suggest around 300 pounds of weight saving. This would definitely have a positive impact on efficiency, especially on fuel economy, which is marked as one of the biggest drawbacks of the current generation. Of course, count on many more improvements. This includes a completely new suspension setup, which should, at least, keep the 2020 Lexus GX on the same level in terms of off-road capabilities. We are pretty sure that this aspect doesn’t worry Toyota’s engineers at all. The will put much more effort into making the new SUV more comfortable on road.

This is probably the trickiest aspect fo the GX. Being a traditional body-on-frame SUV requires a lot of sacrifices. We are not talking about materials and equipment. You can definitely count on a high level in this aspect. The problem of the current generation is practicality. The current model comes with three rows of seating, which is a common thing for a mid-size SUV. However, it offers below-average cargo capacity, which is definitely an important thing in this segment. So, it would be interesting to see how the company will deal with these issues, considering that a capable off-roader requires shore overhangs for maxim off-road capability.
On the other side, we have no doubt that the new model will come with lots of standard equipment. After all, we are talking about Lexus. You can bet on a pretty long list of standard equipment and latest tech features. Speaking of tech features, another certain thing is the company’s new Safety Sense suite of advanced system. It includes things like blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high beams, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control,pre-collision warning system with pedestrian protection and many more things.
2020 Lexus GX Engine
The current model comes with a capable 4.6-liter V8 engine. This one is good for about 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque. Seems like a respectable amount of power. However, the actual problem is with the fuel economy. It goes only around 15 mpg in the city and 18 mpg on the highway. So, it won’t be a surprise to see a completely new engine in the offer. A more efficient V6 seems like a reasonable solution. A unit that will offer a similar amount of power, but much better efficiency. Still, we won’t exclude the possibility to see eight cylinders once again, either in the same for or as something new.
2020 Lexus GX Release Date and Price
We are pretty sure that the new 2020 Lexus GX will wait for the new 4Runner to come first. This clearly indicates that the new generation won’t come before the second half of the next year. When it comes to the price, the new model should go too far from the current one, which is available at 52.000 dollars.
