Although it is not official, probably the most popular French crossover SUV is getting few updates. Spy photos are showing the 2020 Renault Captur being tested on snow. Can we expect better off-road capabilities of this model? For sure. Besides that, the company announced the development of the PHEV technology for the crossover. Fans hope to see it already next year with improved fuel economy and other specs.
Besides that, the 2020 Renault Captur will suffer some cosmetic changes and updates. Test mules are under the camouflage, so we can’t see details. However, the Captur crossover will keep dimensions. The new generation of the model is not in sight yet. It is not easy to make predictions, since the new model will be a product of a large partnership between Renault, Nissan, and Daimler. One thing is sure – the main markets of the compact crossover are going to be Europe and especially its homeland, France.
Engines and Specs
The new 2020 Renault Captur will show a variety of engines. But, for now, the company announced only a few details about changes under the bonnet. The crossover is adding a new drivetrain – a 1.3-liter turbocharged unit. The company developed this unit in cooperation with Nissan. The Japanese carmaker also confirmed the new Qashqai will use this powertrain. We still don’t have a specs sheet of the new unit but expect a budget-friendly consumption.
Besides this engine, the 2020 Renault Captur will also offer another petrol and at least one diesel powertrain. That could be a 900 cc motor with 90 hp and 100 lb-ft of torque. The new engine is replacing an existing 1.2-liter. Finally, a 1.5-liter diesel is proven and reliable drivetrain. Many other Renault vehicles are using it. The engine develops 90-110 hp and 160-190 pound-feet of torque. Its consumption drops under 4 l/100 km (over 70 mpg).
The biggest addition for the upcoming season is a PHEV model. Renault and Nissan are together in this since the Japanese company also brings a similar setup for its crossover lineup in the US. This is not official, but the leaking sources are claiming a 1.6-liter petrol unit is the base for the plug-in hybrid. Besides it, the drivetrain system also comes with a 10 kWh battery pack. Fuel economy figures are not announced yet, but the 2020 Renault Captur will be able to run by using only the electric power. In this case, the crossover is getting a range of 50 km (30 miles).
This is an all-new system and we are not surprised that Renault is one of the first carmakers to bring it on. There are already initiatives in French parliament for new laws. This country is thinking green, and in the future, it will cut down the usage of conventional diesel and petrol cars. Some say by 2040 only electric and hybrid models will be allowed in France. From this stance, it is a story rare can believe. But, the entire industry is going toward this goal. The 2020 Renault Captur PHEV is another clue.
2020 Renault Kaptur
Renault Kaptur is the special edition of the crossover for the Russian market. In this country, the vehicle is coming with larger wheelbase and more powerful engines. It is 8 inches longer than the standard edition and wheelbase adds 3 inches. Definitely, the new 2020 Renault Kaptur will be a bigger version of the Captur. Furthermore, the Russian model is getting power from 1.5 or 2.0-liter petrol engine. The diesel choices are the same. The most powerful gasoline drivetrain delivers 145 hp.

The new 2020 Renault Captur is going through a restyling. After seven years, we will finally see many updates that will attract more buyers, especially younger. Well, the French carmaker is well-known for its sleek design. When you mention Renault, the first thing coming to the mind is a comfort. On the other hand, a lot of improvements in the drivetrain system are always needed. The cooperation with Daimler and Nissan will make the work easier.
Interior will offer comfortable seats, climate control, color display at the center of the dashboard. Upper trim levels are bringing more features. The latest information says all the new vehicles with Renault badge are getting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Besides the standard upgrades, the 2020 Renault Captur will offer extra packages with accessories, for example, for an off-road adventure. Individual options include cargo liner, roof rails and bars, or side steps.
