Mitsubishi is making a big comeback. The Japanese company wants to have a bigger role in the automotive market. The 2020 Mitsubishi Pajero is going into a new generation, which will be radical changes in design. Fans are thrilled, especially knowing that this SUV hasn’t been redesigned for ages. This is not only a rumor, and spy shots are there to witness something big is going on.
Further theories about the 2020 Mitsubishi Pajero are saying the crossover SUV will borrow the front end from the L200 truck. Also, different markets will offer a rebadged version of Pajero. In some countries, this vehicle will be available as Shogun. What is more important, the drivetrain lineup is definitely taking some major hits. One of them could be a new hybrid engine.
The new 2020 Mitsubishi Pajero will come back to the US market. Last time it was available there, the crossover was called Montero. We will see under which nameplate it is going to stand now. This vehicle was discontinued in 2009 and never came back. As a mid-size SUV, 2020 Pajero will take the position above the compact Outlander. Mitsubishi’s crossover squad in the United States also offers subcompact Eclipse Cross and Outlander Sport, positioned between these two.
2020 Pajero Engines, Specs
Currently, the Pajero SUV is offering seven choices under its bonnet. Well, not all are available in every market. However, engines are one of the main reasons for the big redesign. Older rigs can’t meet efficiency and emission requirements anymore, and the Japanese company needs to drop and replace them. Mitsubishi is going to be greener since one of the options will be a hybrid unit.
But, let’s see what will be the main options for the engine room. The mid-size SUV will definitely need a V6 engine that meets the demands of buyers and emission regulations of the US. A 3.0-liter unit is a perfect choice. It delivers 225 hp and 215 pound-feet of torque. Also, it shows up well under the hood of the Outlander GT version. This crossover is not offering a front-wheel drive. But, that will be a standard mode for the 2020 Mitsubishi Pajero. All-wheel drive remains optional, and both systems are getting the power through a six-pace automatic gearbox. Paddle shifters are available as well. Towing capacity of the Pajero would be around 3,500 pounds.
A lighter engine is also an option. Currently, there are three four-cylinder powertrains in the lineup. On the other hand, the largest unit at the moment is a 3.8-liter displacement. However, this one is not coming to the US.
Diesel
Outside the United States, Mitsubishi can offer diesel units to its buyers. The base engines in most markets are four-pot diesel drivetrains. The Japanese company is using either 2.8-liter or 3.2-l displacement. We will see if the company is going to keep these engines since there are no too many details about the European and Asian editions. For example, 2020 Mitsubishi Pajero in China enters the market with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder petrol engine. So, everything is possible.
Hybrid
The 2020 Mitsubishi Pajero Hybrid is not an impossible project. Well, the company already builds a PHEV crossover. That is Outlander. A smaller stablemate could borrow its sibling a plug-in hybrid system. Well, the mid-size SUV will need a lot more power. Outputs of 120 hp and 140 lb-ft could be enough for a compact class. Upper tier will require at least 170-180 horsepower. So, a bigger petrol displacement needs to add more energy. But, twin electric motors will remain a support for rear wheels. The range of the 2020 Pajero PHEV will go up to 30 miles. Also, the company works on a new charging system which will need less time to restore the energy. Expect this system to have a premiere on the new Pajero Hybrid in the US.
2020 Mitsubishi Pajero Redesign
Forgot about the old Pajero. The company is bringing a new look to its legendary crossover SUV. We can see the new shape on the test mules spied testing. This aging model hasn’t seen a big redesign for 20 years. Finally, the company is modernizing it, which results in a return to the US market.
Besides the new outfit, the interior must be at the requires level. Mitsubishi is improving infotainment services, so the upcoming 2020 Mitsubishi Pajero could offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Upper trim levels will bring leather upholstery and navigation. Ground clearance is going to be higher than before. With all-terrain tires, the SUV will be a good choice for an off-road adventure. Finally, let’s mention its main advantage – a good value.
