2020 VW Atlas review

North America is one of the most specific car markets in the world. The VW’s management finally realized that a couple of years ago, when they introduced an all-new model called Atlas. This is a mid-size crossover that comes exclusively for the U.S. market, which replaced the more luxurious Touareg, which now rides on roads of Europea and China.

The new SUV came more than a year ago, as the 2018 year models. Latest reports suggest that the company already prepares a couple of modifications for the 2020 VW Atlas, which will represent the third production year of the current, first generation. If we can rely on the latest rumors, there is a fine amount of changes to come, both outside and inside the vehicle. On the other side, the mechanical aspect definitely won’t change. Despite expected changes, this model probably won’t come much earlier than usual.

The German manufacturer is known as the company that doesn’t like to make too many changes during a production cycle. Therefore, we are pretty sure that base design characteristics of the 2020 VW Atlas will remain untouched. Count on a familiar layout. This crossover rides on the company’s modular MQB platform. It is a surprisingly large vehicle, longer than most rivals. In terms of aesthetics, there is nothing unusual about this vehicle. It features pretty conservative styling, typical VW some would say. It is fitted to the company’s newest design language, characterized by almost rectangular headlights and pretty squarish overall layout. As we already mentioned, some changes are expected for the next year. Most likely, this would mean just a couple of nice touches, primarily at front. In this area, we could see some tweaks to the front fascia, bumper etc. The rear end probably won’t change.

2020 VW Atlas Interior

The interior of the current model is kind of a mixed bag. On one side, there is plenty of interior space. The Atlas features 117.3 inches in wheelbase, so it’s no wonder that we are talking about one of the most spacious models in the class. Of course, it comes with three rows of seating. It is one of the rare models in the class that can actually accommodate adult passengers in all three rows of seating. One of the most impressive characteristics of this SUV is its cargo space. You can count on more than 20 cubic feet behind the third row. Once the third row folds down, the capacity goes up to 55.5 cubic feet. Finally, the overall cargo capacity goes all away up to almost 97 cubic feet, which are figures respectable even for a full-size segment.

On the other side, the big complaint goes to the interior styling. The cabin features good quality, but the overall look is way too blend. It doesn’t look cheap, but other models in class offer far more stylish cabins. This primarily refers to the dashboard design, which is very simple and fits more to some compact-sized vehicle. So, we hope that this update could bring some revisions to the dash, which would make this interior more attractive and competitive in this overflowed segment.

2020 VW Atlas Features

When it comes to standard equipment, base models already offer a decent amount of features. This includes things like a 6.5-inch touchscreen, 6-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, USB ports, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto etc. Higher trims offer leather upholstery, heated and power-adjustable seats, bigger touchscreen, large 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, premium 12-speaker audio system, navigation, LED headlights and much more.

In terms of safety features, base models come with things like automatic post-collision braking and a rearview camera. Higher trims are equipped with things like blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, forward collision monitoring with automatic braking, lane departure warning, park assist etc.

2020 VW Atlas Engines

We have no doubt that the 2020 VW Atlas will continue with two familiar engines in the offer. Base models will feature an efficient 2.0-liter turbo inline-four, which is good for about 235 horsepower.

A large 3.6-liter V6 is also in the offer. It delivers 276 horsepower. Both engines come with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Atlas won’t give you particularly good performances, but that’s not the biggest problem with this SUV.

Fuel economy is lower compared to most rivals. It goes around 22 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway with the base turbo-four engine. The V6 version returns around 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. On the other side, max towing capacity of 5.000 pounds is pretty much average number for mid-size crossovers.
