Since the 2020 MY is unchanged, we have a right to expect a lot from its successor. The 2021 Acura MDX will go through a huge redesign to offer their buyers the latest words in design, technology, driving… Honda’s premium department is developing the new model and the first spy photos are here. Still, the official announcement is missing. However, we believe that Acura won’t be late. There is enough time to prepare the new model for the debut as 2021 MY.
We can hear the carmaker is planning bug styling updates. However, the 2021 Acura MDX will keep a familiar appearance – aggressive and stylish. Of course, the size is also pretty much the same, so the cabin could take three rows of seats. Equipment inside the cockpit is taking another level of luxury. Head up display and possible autopilot are some things we can frequently find reading the rumors.
Besides that, we expect the update under the hood. The current model is offering a hybrid setup. The next step could be the PHEV system. SUV’s closest sibling, Honda Pilot, was spied with plug-in technology. Still, the carmaker is not offering the base hybrid configuration on its non-premium SUV.
There are a lot of reasons to eagerly wait for the 2021 Acura MDX. The SUV will be definitely more competitive in the market. The competition in the mid-size three-row luxury class is pretty tough, but we believe in Honda and Acura.
Release Date and Prices
The new 2021 Acura MDX will come out late in 2020. The company has just started the development of the new SUV. It will take some time, but the first tests are done. Well, some fans have doubts about the prototypes, which show a few interesting details. Engineers will need time to make everything perfect and the MDX will be ready by the last quarter of 2020.
The price will go up a bit. The SUV is one of the most affordable in the segment (at least the base version). The new price will be closer to $50,000. Upper-scale models with top optional packages can cost over $60,000. We expect news about the 2021 Acura MDX Type S. If the performance-tuned version enters the market, the price will jump significantly.
2021 Acura MDX Type S Spy Photos
There are the first images of the MDX being tested. However, the fans noticed a few interesting details. Aggressive stance drew their attention and most of them had a strange feeling about the SUV. But, when the rumors about Type S started to spread, we found a connection between these two.
For example, we can see the quad-pipe exhaust, which suggests there is a monster under the hood. However, we still don’t know what will power it. According to rumors, the hybrid setup is likely. If the MDX goes PHEV, this configuration will be capable to deliver 400 hp, which is more than enough for the performance SUV.
2021 Acura MDX Engines, Hybrid, and Specs
Under the hood of the base version remains a trusted V6 unit. A 3.5-liter engine is capable to produce 280 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. An eight-speed power router is distributing power to front wheels. The AWD is a highlight of the current version and we believe engineers will improve it for the 2021 Acura MDX. So-called Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) is creating a superb driving impression. Traction, balance, response… everything is there.
Optionally, you can choose a hybrid setup. The same petrol unit is mated to an electric power bank. In this case, you can count on 320 hp, which is 10 ponies more than the Lexus RX 450h can do. A seven-speed DCT gearbox is a pair this time. Fuel economy of the mid-size SUV jumps to 27 mpg with this setup.
The new 2021 Acura MDX could become the plug-in hybrid. we expect the company to raise the game to the new level. Also, fans base their hopes on the test mule of the Honda Pilot. The non-premium SUV was caught with the PHEV opening above the front wheel. For a long time, we can read about this version. MDX already took advantage of the base hybrid system, and the plug-in is a logical upgrade for the 2021 season.
Besides the standard model, there are a lot of available upgrades for the MDX. We already mentioned hybrid and PHEV drive systems, SH-AWD, and Type S. The company will also carry over the A-Spec package. You won’t get the model with improved performance. This suite is bringing cosmetic tuning with unique wheels, grille, and interior. Currently, it costs $3,500.
If you are willing to spend extra, we recommend the Advance and Entertainment package. Huge optional displays and premium audio with wireless headphones are cool upgrades for long trips. The Advance suite comes with LED fog lamps, USB ports for the third row, ventilated from buckets, and a 360-degree camera.
