2021 BMW X8: What We Know So Far

Well, it’s not that we didn’t expect to see something like that. Yes, the company’s flagship X7 is about to get its two-row, coupe iteration. The new model is expected to arrive by the end of this year, but some sources suggest it could come sooner than we expect, in the form of a concept. Therefore, we will call it the 2021 BMW X8 for now, even though the production version will rather come as the 2022 model year.

In any case, most of the things are quite easy to predict. The new model has been spotted on the road and even though it still wears a camouflage, we know that the Bavarian carmaker will take the same approach in the case of X6, which came as a coupe version of the popular X5 mid-size crossover. It will use the same mechanics and interior design, but some sources suggest we could see a little bit different front face compared to the three-row sibling.

When it comes to base design characteristics, things are pretty easy to predict. The 2021 BMW X8 will feature the same mechanics as the X7. It will ride on the same version of the CLAR platform and feature the same wheelbase, which goes around 122.2 inches. On the other side, count on a shorter rear overhang, which would provide a little bit sportier appearance.

When it comes to the styling, the flagship 7-seater will certainly serve as the basis, but the key difference will be in the rear end, which will feature a sloping roof that provides that coupe-like appearance. Some sources also suggest a different front end design. Although this may seem hard to believe, chances to see such an approach are actually pretty big. If you look at the test mule, headlights do look different, even though the camouflage.

Interior

This aspect won’t be that different, except for the fact that there will be just two rows of seats. That will be the key difference between the two models. At this point, it’s hard to tell if the sloping roof will reduce the amount of headroom in the second row but we do not doubt that the cargo area will be notable smaller.

More importantly, the dashboard will probably feature an identical layout. This means a relatively simplistic design approach, but a full load of quality materials and tech features. Of course, there is always room for exclusive features, such as unique color schemes and similar things. However, we do not doubt that most of the things are about to remain the same. This refers to the list of standard and available features, which should be pretty similar to the one in X7.

2021 BMW X8 Engines

When it comes to the engine lineup, we don’t expect bigger surprises either. Therefore, base models would probably feature a familiar 3.0-liter turbo inline-six, which puts out around 335 horsepower. The 4.4-liter V8 should be available in a couple of variants, with either 523 or 600 horsepower. Of course, European models would be offered with diesel engines too.

Some sources suggest that the Bavarian carmaker could offer a completely new version of the V8 engine for the 2021 BMW X8 M models. Rumors say that the max output would go up to 750 horsepower. At this point, we are still waiting to hear something from the officials.
