2022 Toyota 4Runner

Despite the age, the current generation of Toyota’s famous SUV still marks some pretty impressive sales numbers. Simply, the current market lacks genuine BoF SUVs. So, it’s no wonder that many buyers choose this one, which has been around since 2009. Also, this clearly indicates that the Japanese manufacturer won’t rush with changes. The company is currently busy with the new Tundra and Land Cruiser when it comes to the BoF department. So, the 2022 Toyota 4Runner is about to carry on in the same way.

This means you may count on a vehicle that still has some pretty good things to offer, despite the age. Of course, the first thing that comes to mind is how this SUV acts of the road, where it is still one of the key players on the market. Also, you may count on excellent reliability ratings, as well as on a spacious and practical cabin. On the other side, the model seems outdated in some aspects, especially in terms of the interior design, while the fuel economy is low for the class. We expect to see the 2022 Toyota 4Runner sometime in the last quarter of 2021.

2022 Toyota 4Runner Redesign

In terms of base design characteristics, this model hasn’t changed too much in the last decade. We saw a facelift six years ago, but even that update was quite mild. After that, only yearly updates were coming. So, it’s no wonder that the 2022 Toyota 4Runner is about to carry on with a familiar design. This means a layout that offers a rugged body-on-frame platform and suspension that combines rigidity with some relatively advanced design solutions, including multi-ling at the rear.

Of course, the 4Runner is available with all kinds of upgrades, including the excellent TRD Pro model, which offers higher ground clearance as well as various other upgrades, such as skid plate, FOX shock absorbers, TRD front springs, a TRD-Pro-specific roof rack, a retro TOYOTA script grille.

Interior

On the inside, things haven’t changed for a very long time. So, it’s no wonder that many consider this cabin outdated. Simply, the dashboard is rather functional than good-looking and it utilizes mostly hard plastics, while aesthetics are typical for models from 10-15 years ago. Still, the company updated this cabin with all kinds of new tech features but we will get on that in a minute.

2022 Toyota 4Runner Interior

When it comes to the interior space, this is a three-row SUV. However, in order to keep off-road performances at a high level, Toyota kept the wheelbase relatively short for the segment, under 110 inches. As a result, the third row is really tight, while the cargo area is pretty small behind the third row. Still, if you primarily use two rows only, the amount of passenger and cargo room is more than decent.

Features

We might see a couple of novelties in this aspect but most of the things are about to remain the same. Therefore, base models will certainly come standard with things like an 8-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, an eight-speaker stereo, satellite radio, Bluetooth, four USB ports, WiFi hotspot, keyless entry, power liftgate and a 120V power output. The list of options currently includes things like dual-zone automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, a power moonroof, a rear sunshade, navigation, a premium audio system and many more. We presume some of these could become standard next year.

When it comes to safety, the current model already comes fully loaded and we don’t expect bigger changes in the future. The current list of standard features includes a rearview camera, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights.

2022 Toyota 4Runner Engine

Things under the hood definitely won’t change for the 2022 Toyota 4Runner. It will carry on with a well-known 4.0-liter V6. It puts out around 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque and comes in pair with a 5-speed automatic transmission. Thanks to the big displacement, there is plenty of low-end torque, while the overall driving dynamics are pretty good.

This engine is powerful and reliable, while the key drawback is fuel economy. You may count on just 16 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway. That’s pretty low by today’s standards.
