The plug-in hybrid drivetrain is on the way for the 2021 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. The four-door version of the legendary 4×4 SUV is larger than the 2-door model. It is not so agile but comes with a more powerful drivetrain and similar off-road capabilities. Well, the larger engine will make the biggest difference. Also, 20 inches mean more space inside the cabin. Well, when there is one. One of the best things about this vehicle is its open-roof design, with optional top.
Besides the new engine, the upcoming 2021 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited will not suffer cosmetic changes. The SUV updated its design recently, so there is no need for another portion of modifications. However, the mid-cycle refresh is close and the first significant changes on the fifth-gen SUV will be available. For 2020 YM, FCA cut the Moab trim. Still, there are plenty of options, since a 2.0-liter turbo engine is now one of the choices on more trims. Our recommendation is Wrangler Sahara with a 4×4 drive, which will maximize the off-road driving impression.

2021 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited vs 2-Door SUV
There are two versions of Wrangler. Buyers can pick a 2- or 4-door model. The bigger one is also called Unlimited. It is 20 inches longer than its little brother (188 inches compared to 168 inches). By choosing one of these configurations won’t leave you without further options. The 2021 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited will only offer Sahara and Sport Altitude as exclusive trim packages for a 4-door unit. On the other hand, engines and other versions are the same on both SUVs. Of course, there is a difference in the price. As you can guess, a larger model costs more, about $3,000 for any selected package. On the other hand, the 2-door Wrangler is more agile and economical, thanks to the lighter body.
Engines
FCA goes all-in with the 2021 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. A V6, turbocharged four-pot, and a turbodiesel are options. So, there is enough juice for any kind of drivers. A 2.0-liter displacement is the lightest part of the squad. Still, it is pretty mighty with 270 ponies and 295 lb-ft of torque. A four-banger offers more twist than a V6. The famous Pentastar engine is one of the most reliable powerplants in the market. A 3.6-liter mill is able to create 285 hp and 260 lb-ft. Engineers pair it with either manual or automatic gearbox. Either way, you will get 20 mpg combined.

2021 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Diesel
A 3.0-liter turbodiesel engine is a star of FCA’s lineup. Ever since it arrived for Ram 1500, it expands to other popular vehicles by this carmaker. Grand Cherokee is already using it, and now it is also under the hood of the 2021 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. A 2-door model is not going to offer you this powerplant. Well, it is available only on three trim levels, which limits buyers with options. A 3.0-liter engine is returning 260 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque, mates an 8-speed auto transmission, and goes up to 29 mpg on the open road. The recommended upgrade is the 4×4 drive. However, there are differences in the lineup for this one as well, since Rubicon comes with so-called Rock-Trac transfer case, which should make it more capable of off-roading.
Plug-In Hybrid Debuts in 2021
The 2021 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited will have another engine in its lineup next season. Spy photos are unveiling what the company is hiding… or they are trying to give fans some hints. Test mules are covering plug-in charging ports above front wheels. Well, we still don’t know what kind of system is on the way. FCA already offers the eTorque setup on some of its vehicles, including the current Wrangler. Still, that is not something we expect from a hybrid vehicle since drivers will only get a slight mpg boost.

2021 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Versions and Prices
The base 4-door 2021 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is coming with the Sport trim level and costs $31,000. A V6 is standard as well as a soft-top roof. Sport S will come with a 17-inch wheels system and automatic lights. Sahara is one of the best offers since it boosts the off-road performance with special parts. You will find all-terrain tires wrapping 18-inch wheels. Mild-hybrid eTorque system becomes available to save some fuel. Sahara trim is available only with the 4-door layout and this SUV’s MSRP is $39,000.
Rubicon version adds even more equipment for off-road drive. It costs $42,000 thanks to special Dana axles and Rock-Trax system. There is also a power outlet and a few other cool upgrades. The FCA will revisit the remaining sub-models in the lineup. Currently, there are more than 10 trims available for further building. Well, Jeep won’t just cut some models before they prepare a replacement. Also, more colors will be there, and we can hear the fresh infotainment system is about to debut soon.
