Montero is the last Mitsubishi’s large SUV that appeared in the USA. After the discontinuation in 2006, fans are waiting for its comeback. Now, the alliance between Nissan and Mitsubishi could speed up the return of the flagship model. Either way, the vehicle never saw the new generation after 2006 and the 2020 Mitsubishi Montero could bring huge changes leading to the next-gen model.
In other parts of the world, the 2020 Mitsubishi Montero is going to appear as Pajero. Well, a major part of the market offers the other name. Also, in its homeland, the SUV is coming out as Mitsubishi Shogun. We are monitoring rumors on all these vehicles and there are some thrilling details hinting the new generation is on the way. With it, we believe the 2020 Montero will be ready to conquer the US market again.
Do not mix up Montero with Montero Sport SUV. Although they carry the same name, the Sport edition is smaller and belongs to the mid-size segment. Pajero and Shogun are also available as such SUVs and Sport badge is added to their name.
2020 Mitsubishi Montero Changes
The fourth generation of the Mitsubishi Montero arrived in 2006. With the end of the third series, the company had withdrawn from the US market. There are few reasons behind this decision and the new platform and the look couldn’t fix that.
But now, with cosmetic changes and engine updates, Mitsubishi wants to test its capacities on the main stage. To do so, they must revisit their flagship model. More aggressive appearance is the first step. More lightweight materials are going to be in the body of the 2020 Mitsubishi Montero. Lighter and more efficient, it will improve fuel economy. On the other hand, the big rig will keep the towing capabilities.
The new front fascia will make fans happy after a long time. Grille, bumper, and headlights will be inspired by the all-new L200 truck (also called Mitsubishi Triton). It could also head the same way as the SUV. Spy photographers are not delivering shots of the new SUV. But, as we are getting closer to the next season, the prototypes of the vehicle are going to appear. Then, we will know more about its exterior changes.
Interior Features and Accessories
More than the exterior updates, the 2020 Mitsubishi Montero needs the cabin overhaul. The SUV market is evolving every day. The speed of changes is incredible and carmakers must develop and adapt very fast. It keeps them competitive on the market. Mitsubishi shows some promises by expanding the lineup with the Montero Sport model. But, the big update of the infotainment system will be the priority for the next full-size SUV.
The cabin will come with three rows of seats. The infotainment system will get some cool features as a result of cooperation with Nissan. What’s more, the new Montero could grow, which means more space inside the cockpit for all passengers. As for the exterior, we don’t have precise info about the interior and cargo space it will offer.
2020 Mitsubishi Montero Engines
We already mentioned some of the reasons why Montero is not in the US market. The major cause was under the hood. The carmaker couldn’t make its SUV more efficient. For a long time, Mitsubishi struggled with emission standards. Well, these were not a problem overseas and the vehicle used seven different configurations during the fourth generation.
The most favorite one was a 3.2-liter diesel unit with 170 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque. A 3.8-liter V6 petrol unit managed to deliver approximately the same level of twist power, but it skyrockets the horsepower to 275. Still, the gas emissions are poor and they meet only Euro 4 standards. A 3.0-liter is a good alternative, available for the Japanese buyers. This petrol drivetrain can produce 150 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque. A 3.5-liter engine is very similar to Nissan’s displacement. However, Mitsubishi tuned it to produce 190 hp and 225 lb-ft of torque.
Mitsubishi/Nissan Alliance Outcomes
Two Japanese companies build a strong partnership which should make both carmakers more competitive on the market. Mitsubishi is going to borrow some drivetrains, and the abovementioned 3.5-liter unit could be a solution for the US market. On the other hand, Nissan is also known for its electric vehicles and the development of the new units will make Mitsubishi part of the future. Montero is set to get either a hybrid or PHEV system. Currently, the Outlander PHEV is the best-selling crossover/SUV in the segment. But, the situation is quite different in the US market and in larger classes.
When Will 2020 Mitsubishi Montero Be Available?
The new 2020 Mitsubishi Montero is coming early next year. The company will pick a big car show to present it. If the SUV comes back to the US market, then New York or Chicago could host the debut of the new Montero. Plug-hybrid will arrive later.
