2020 Subaru Outback Hybrid review

A class for itself. The famous crossover has been around for years and it still doesn’t have a true competitor. Several carmakers tried to design something similar, but the Outback has always remained the first choice for drivers who prefer vehicles with excellent practicality. With its wagon-like layout, this model is perfect for family-oriented drivers, but things are about to become even better with the upcoming redesign. The current model is on the market since 2014. Seems like a short time for another overhaul. However, the company wants to adapt its whole lineup to the newest architecture and styling philosophy. Novelties for this occasion will be numerous. We are about to see plenty of interesting, and some of them will come under the hood. The company prepares to introduce 2020 Subaru Outback Hybrid, for the first time. This model will provide a perfect balance between economy and performances.

2020 Subaru Outback Hybrid redesign

The introduction of the new 2020 Subaru Outback Hybrid will follow the redesign of the standard gasoline model, which is about to come in the next year. Two models will feature the same design characteristics, starting from a new platform. As you probably know, the Japanese manufacturer has developed a completely new, Subaru Global Architecture. It is highly modular, which allows adaptation to pretty much every kind of vehicle. Therefore, it will underprint every upcoming model from Subaru, including this one.

The 2020 Subaru Outback Hybrid will benefit from the new architecture in many ways, starting from better efficiency, weight savings, better driving dynamics, a higher level of comfort and much more.

2020 Subaru Outback Hybrid Styling

Just like in terms of mechanics, the visual appearance of 2020 Subaru Outback Hybrid should be pretty much the same as in the standard gasoline model. We are about to see a completely new styling, which is about to improve visual appeal for sure. The company has recently presented a new concept Viziv, which served as inspiration for the brand’s newest design language. There is already one model that came based on it. It is an all-new mid-size SUV called Ascent. The new styling philosophy will bring more muscular approach, a bolder face and angular front end, for the first time from this manufacturer. Still, don’t expect any radical change. The 2020 Subaru Outback Hybrid will stick to its roots, featuring familiar wagon-like crossover shape with conventional styling solutions and focus on practicality.

Once again, expect the same approach as in the standard gasoline version. Two models will feature completely the same cabin layout. Minimal differences are expected in terms of instrument cluster only, as well as few more tweaks in terms of controls. Other than that, things will be the same.

In practice, this would mean a lot of inspiration from the new Ascent SUV. In the past, the Outback, as well as most other Subaru models were characterized by a pretty conservative approach in terms of aesthetics. The new Ascent brings some significant novelties in terms of dashboard design, as well as in terms of materials choice. In simple words, the new cabin features much more style and we expect the new 2020 Subaru Outback Hybrid will follow this trend.

Of course, that doesn’t mean at all that the new crossover is about to lose any of its practicality. Moreover, expect further improvements compared to the previous generation. Still, keep in mind that the 2020 Subaru Outback Hybrid will have a couple of drawbacks compared to base gasoline models. Of course, this primarily refers to the cargo capacity. The battery pack will most likely be installed under the floor of the cargo area. Therefore, count on fewer cubic feet compared to gasoline models.

2020 Subaru Outback Hybrid Powertrain

Finally, here are some words about the most interesting aspect of the 2020 Subaru Outback Hybrid. A few days ago, the company has presented an all-new hybrid system for the small crossover Crosstrek. The new system is based on a 2.0-liter gasoline engine and comes with an 8.8-kWh battery pack. Total output goes close to 150 horsepower. Of course, such amount doesn’t seem enough for a much bigger Outback. Most likely, this system will be built over a bigger 2.5-liter engine and should feature a larger battery pack. This plug-in hybrid will feature an all-electric range as well, while a max output will probably go somewhere between 200 and 220 horsepower. The new system will come in pair with a CVT gearbox.

Besides this hybrid system, the next-generation Outback will also come with a new turbo inline-four engine. This unit is super-efficient, on par with V6 engines in terms of power. It delivers around 260 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque.
