Like many other models from General Motors, this full-size pickup truck won’t receive updates as soon as it was expected. Although the mid-cycle update was planned for the 2022 model year, things will have to wait for a little bit more, due to Coronavirus pandemics. From what we know so far, the refreshed version will probably come as the 2022 or 2023 model. Meanwhile, the 2022 GMC Sierra will carry on with a familiar design.
This means that you will have to wait to see new interior and exterior designs. The next year’s model will continue in a familiar way, offering a well-balanced pickup truck, which looks good and offers a high level of capability. What we like about it is a long list of standard and available equipment, as well as a wide powertrain offer, which includes some pretty capable versions. On the other side, the outdated interior will remain one of the main issues.
2022 GMC Sierra Redesign
Considering that the update has been delayed, the 2022 GMC Sierra will continue with a familiar design. The current generation has been around since 2019 and it offers a good balance between capabilities and convenience. Just like the Silverado, it rides on the T1 platform, which has brought notable improvements compared to the previous generation. The new model offers a more comfortable ride and that’s its main advantage over the previous generation.
The planned refresh is supposed to bring a new styling. However, the 2022 GMC Sierra will continue in the same and we can’t say that’s a bad thing. Simply, the current version looks really good with its bold appearance and we have no doubt it can remain competitive for another year. Still, we won’t exclude the possibility to see some changes for the next year, the minor ones. This refers to new color options.
This aspect was probably the most anticipated thing of the delayed update. Simply, the current model features the same cabin design as the previous generation. That’s the thing that bothers most potential buyers, as the competition looks way better from the inside. Of course, the 2022 GMC Sierra will continue with that dashboard design which, despite the outdated look, offers decent ergonomics and solid functionality.
The interior quality definitely could be better. The materials are mostly hard plastics, while the build quality isn’t impressive either. Also, we have to say that no matter the cab style, Sierra offers less passenger space than most rivals. Speaking of the cab styles, you may count on three familiar versions in the offer.
We presume that the next year’s model won’t bring any notable changes regarding the standard and available equipment. Therefore, base models should come with things like a 7-inch touch screen, a six-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, a USB port, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. There will be much more in higher trim levels, where you can get goodies like a sunroof, keyless entry, dual-zone climate control, wireless device charging, an 8-inch touch screen, a seven-speaker Bose audio system, satellite radio, HD Radio, a Wi-Fi hot spot, additional USB ports, voice recognition, navigation, household-style power outlet etc.
The same thing is with safety features – things should be pretty much the same as in the current model. So, base models will come with a rearview camera only, while the number of options will be very big. Some of the highlights are goodies like adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, lane change alert, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, a surround-view parking camera system, a rear camera mirror, and a head-up display.
2022 GMC Sierra Engines
As we’ve just mentioned, you may count on a variety of powertrain choices in the offer. Base models will come with a 2.7-liter turbo-four, which puts out around 310 horsepower and 348 pound-feet of torque. Of course, V8 units are also on offer. The first one is a familiar 5.3-liter V8, which puts out around 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. If you prefer something even more capable, there is a well-known 6.2-liter unit, which puts out around 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque.
We have no doubt that the diesel version will also remain on the offer. This variant is powered by a 3.0-liter turbodiesel, which puts out around 277 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque.
When properly equipped, the Sierra can tow up to 11.800 pounds.
2022 GMC Sierra Release Date and Price
We expect that the 2022 GMC Sierra will hit the market sometime late in the year. The price should also remain the same, which means that base versions will go around 31.000 dollars. Of course, the competition remains the same and includes models like Toyota Tundra, Nissan Titan, Ram 1500, Chevy Silverado etc.
