The Bavarian carmaker competes in the subcompact segment for some time. This crossover is current in the second generation, which has been around for about three years. Judging on the spy shots, it is pretty clear that the 2020 BMW X1 is about to receive a mid-cycle update. For this occasion, the company will introduce a fine portion of novelties. Typically for these updates, we will see numerous visual upgrades.
However, it looks like the company prepares some changes on the inside and, more importantly, some chassis tweaks. The 2020 BMW X1 is about to come significantly updated, with novelties that will help in competing in the segment of subcompact crossovers. As we already mentioned, the testing model has been spotted, which indicates that the new model should come pretty soon. That will probably happen in the third quarter of the year, sometimes at the end of the summer.
2020 BMW X1 Redesign
The 2020 BMW X1 will continue with a familiar layout as the company’s entry-level crossover. Interestingly, it is one of the rare models that feature an FWD layout. That’s because it rides on a platform that is practically borrowed from Mini. In normal circumstances, that probably wouldn’t be a big issue, but the fact is that this crossover doesn’t deliver something that would normally be expected from a premium crossover. Therefore, many reports suggest tweaks to the chassis, mainly in terms of a reworked suspension, that would probably improve the overall driving experience.
2020 BMW X1 Styling
Of course, the most important aspect of this update would be a visual improvement. The 2020 BMW X1 will come with a fine amount of aesthetical novelties. The testing model has been spotted and covered areas indicate a lot of interesting changes. Of course, most of them will come in front. Areas like front bumper and fascia have been covered and we can only presume that the new model will come up with something inspired by a recently redesigned X5 mid-size crossover.
Changes will come on the other end as well. The 2020 BMW X1 should come with subtle changes in areas such as taillights, rear bumper, tailgate, exhaust pipes etc. From the side, we count on a new set of wheels and maybe some subtle changes such as new side skirts. Of course, count on a couple of new color options as well.
2020 BMW X1 Interior
The interior of the 2020 BMW X1 is also about to come with changes. According to the latest reports, we will see some tweaks to the dashboard, more than it was initially expected. You probably already know that this update is about to bring a new touchscreen, but it looks like we are also about to see a new digital instrument cluster, which was presented recently in the new 3 Series.
Other than that, we could see some new color schemes and similar tweaks. However, the base layout will remain practically the same. In practice, this means not just a good looking, but also a quite functional cabin. For example, this crossover features some of the biggest cargo areas in the class. You can count on 27 cubic feet behind seats, while the overall cargo capacity goes up to almost 59 cubic feet. Also, both rows offer a lot of leg and headroom. Front seats are particularly comfortable and supportive.
When it comes to the standard equipment, we expect a couple of additions in the new model. Besides a new touchscreen, some reports suggest a Wi-Fi hotspot and satellite radio as new standard features.
2020 BMW X1 Engines
The current model comes with only one engine in the offer. It is a familiar 2.0-liter turbo inline-four, which is good for about 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, which is definitely enough power for quick acceleration and good overall performances. Fuel economy is pretty average in this case. You can count on about 23 mpg on the highway and 32 mpg on the highway. That could be a reason to see a new powertrain option in the offer. Some reports suggest that a new 1.5-liter unit could come to North America as well. This unit delivers a similar amount of power. It is good for about 230 horses, but it features better overall efficiency, which in practice mean higher mpg ratings. Both engines come with a familiar 8-speed automatic transmission.
2020 BMW X1 Release Date and Price
Given the mid-cycle update, the 2020 BMW X1 should arrive earlier than usual. Latest reports suggest it will hit the market sometime in the third quarter of the year. When it comes to the price, we don’t expect bigger changes. Base models should go around 35.000 dollars. Competition in the segment is pretty tough. The biggest rivals are, naturally Mercedes-Benz GLA and Audi Q3, but there are also models like Volvo XC40, Cadillac XT4, Infiniti QX30, and others.
