The 2020 Genesis GV80 is a new SUV. It belongs to the premium class. The parent company of this nameplate is Hyundai. After a full-size model, the Korean carmaker is now in the luxury market. What is next? A full-size off-road monster that will compete with Ford Bronco and Toyota 4Runner. Hyundai is very ambitious. With attractive price, they will try to draw more attention. However, the quality and level of luxury is still unknown. But, chiefs in the Korean company know this and they will try to elbow their way with Genesis brand, although they will face the competition in Lexus, Lincoln, Cadillac, Infiniti, Acura…
The company announced their plans and ambitions. But, rare believed that 2020 Genesis GV80 will come so soon. Now, the Korean carmaker must be taken very seriously. The prototype of the premium SUV had a debut in 2017. Now, it is coming out in few months. That speed of development is surprising. However, we lack any further information about interior and performance. But, Hyundai has no too many options for the engine room. On the other hand, we will see what kind of info- and entertaining accessories could boost the interest of hi-tech lovers.
2020 Genesis GV80 Engines, Specs
The new full-size Hyundai Palisade is using a 3.8-liter V6 engine. The same drivetrain will probably lay under the hood of the 2020 Genesis GV80 SUV. That is the largest unit in the lineup of the Korean company. For the Palisade, the drivetrain is good for 290 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. Besides the luxurious upgrades inside the cabin, the new premium SUV will need more power. Engineers could tune this unit to crunch out over 300 horses and up to 300 pound-feet of twist. Turbochargers would help this V6 engine achieve even 400 ponies. We are sure that rear-wheel drive is going to be standard in combination with an eight-speed auto gearbox. The same transmission can send power to all four corners of the Genesis GV80.
Speaking of turbo engines, Hyundai could install a 3.3-l V6 powertrain for its new premium SUV. The GV80 would get a twin-turbo system that produces over 350 hp and 375 lb-ft. We can see this one serving the sedan. So, the new SUV can also borrow it and take advantage of the high output. Buyers of premium models expect it.
But, if they don’t like turbo units, then a V8 is the final possibility. We could see the 2020 Genesis GV80 wit ha 5.0-liter displacement. In this case, the SUV will be eligible to get on the line with Toyota Land Cruiser. With it, Hyundai can achieve the double goal – a premium and an off-road model. A V8 can produce 390 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque, which is 10 ponies and 20 pounds more than the Land Cruiser. Furthermore, Hyundai’s engine returns better fuel economy. However, we still don’t know how will Genesis GV80 perform on tough terrains. Not too many models can compete with Toyota in this segment.
Spy photos are showing the new 2020 Genesis GV80. We can see the production is near, although test mules are carrying heavy camouflage. From visible details, headlights and bumpers are the same as these we saw on prototype back in 2017. Back then, this concept seemed to be almost production-ready. The GV80 will definitely use most of that platform, such as double lamps, big headlights, and unique grille. Also, the company will add special colors for its premium SUV.
Interior is very important. We saw that Hyundai is capable to compete with others in the engine and performance section. But, this company never stunned us with its features. Now, they must make a huge step towards the premium segment. We know the GV80 SUV is going to be a seven-seater. The aggressive look and the sloping roof will cut some space at the back of the cockpit. However, there will be enough room in front two rows. By folding rear seats, you will be able to create more cargo space.
2020 Genesis GV80 Release Date, Price Estimations
Genesis GV80 is coming next year. Hyundai confirmed the new model is on the way, and spy shots confirm these stories. But, the carmaker is not announcing any schedule. We believe the sales will start early next year, and the production version of the GV80 will debut late this year.
We don’t know two important details yet. Besides the release date, the other one is price. We can’t compare the GV80 to the competition since we don’t know how far Hyundai will go with luxury inside the SUV. The price will be above $60k for sure. For example, Toyota offers Land Cruiser for $85,000 and Lexus LX 570 is near that value. Lincoln Navigator costs $75,000, as well as the Cadillac Escalade. Infiniti QX80 is one of the cheapest SUVs in the full-size premium class with a price tag of $65,000.
