Nissan Patrol is one of the longest-serving nameplates in the automaker’s history. The company launched six generations during a 60-year production. Now, the seventh series is coming as we approach the seventh decade of existence. The vehicle will probably arrive either as 2020 Nissan Patrol, although some rumors say the delay is possible. The full-size SUV is caught at testing in Asia. So, it is just a matter of time when will Japanese company add it to its lineup.

The 2020 Nissan Patrol will also bring changes for the US version of the SUV – Armada. These vehicles belong to the full-size segment and the new Patrol will be bigger than before. Currently, the SUV is offering only a 5.6-liter engine. Next year, the 4.0 unit could come back to the lineup. Finally, Nissan could add a diesel unit for models that are offered outside the US. The new generation is going to bring many changes, starting with the front fascia, and all over to the cabin.

The first test mules are being tested in Asia. The Middle East is the main market for the 2020 Nissan Patrol. There, the SUV reaches the peak of its popularity. Of course, Nissan Armada is a model for the USA, but it will carry similar changes as its sibling. Heavily covered, the new Patrol is not unveiling too much. The size of the SUV is the same as before. If there are some changes, we will measure them in centimeters. So, the Patrol returns with the same rugged lines and bold appearance.

Whatsoever, after ten years in production, the current generation will need a massive update. Every detail counts, so modernization will improve the chances of this SUV. Nissan will have to install new LED head- and taillights. Furthermore, grille and bumpers could get a fresh shape to offer more aesthetic styling and better airflow. Large wheels are highlights from the side, while the huge tail is getting a new set of lights and bumper.

Engines

Currently, we are sure the 2020 Nissan Patrol will come with a 5.6-liter V8 engine. This petrol unit is the largest one the Japanese company has to offer. With 400 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque, it is more potent than Toyota’s and FCA’s 5.7-liter unit. The towing capacity of the Nissan Patrol will be over 3900 kg (8,600 pounds). Well, the SUV is not the most fuel-friendly model you will find on the market. But, the automaker promised that some revisions of the 5.6-liter displacement will cut consumption.

Besides the revisit, there are few more options for how the company can improve fuel economy. The first scenario is to bring back a 4.0-liter V6 engine. This unit will reduce output, but the Patrol SUV would still be pretty potent. Maximum output of this unit is 275 horsepower and 290 pound-feet of torque. Towing capacity will also suffer. So, Nissan will look probably for some other option which will maintain the power outputs.

Surprisingly, the company is not offering the SUV with the diesel engine. The only possible solution could be a 5.0-liter turbodiesel V8 drivetrain. It is capable to make 310 hp and 555 pound-feet of torque. Both fuel economy and towing capacity will get a boost, as well as the emissions. The automaker has to make balance and see if it is worth of bringing the diesel to markets where 2020 Nissan Patrol will appear.

No Hybrid In Plans

The last possibility to improve the fuel economy on the new 2020 Nissan Patrol is a development of the hybrid system. However, this seems to be the least likely option with the company denying electrification of their largest SUV. This system needs more features and equipment, which will make it heavier than it is. And the current Patrol is already massive. More pounds would make it even slower and hard to handle, while the hybrid setup couldn’t improve the numbers on the fuel economy to the wanted level. Of course, the development of such drivetrain would cost a lot, which would be reflected in the vehicle’s price.

2020 Nissan Patrol – Armada and Nismo

In the US, the new Armada will come mostly unchanged. The new generation will start with the Patrol. No diesel or V6 engine are options for this market and the SUV. Armada sticks to a 5.6-liter drivetrain and its massive output. Both vehicles could get the Nismo tuning in the upcoming season.

The special department of Nissan’s company will upgrade the drivetrain to develop more power. Engineers hope they will be able to squeeze around 450 ponies out of the V8 drivetrain. There was one edition of Patrol Nismo in the past and it managed to deliver 420 horsepower. Now, with new technologies and chargers, Nissan is ready to push it further. Of course, there will be numerous other upgrades around the SUV, including more aggressive bumpers and wheels, as well as the sportier buckets inside the cockpit. The interior also uses the latest technologies and gadgets for the infotainment system.
