If there is a model Japanese manufacturer regrets to be discontinued, it would be the Xterra. Fortunately for many of us, latest reports suggest its comeback as 2019 Nissan Xterra.

Originally introduced in 1999, this SUV was known very well for its versatility. Great off-road capabilities, practical interior, and even a good-looking interior were the things on this model that off-road enthusiasts highly appreciated. During more than 15 years of production, we have seen two generations of it. The production finally ended in 2015. As you may presume, this model was always in a close relationship with the famous Frontier pickup.

You probably know that the current generation of this pickup truck is very old. It dates from the 2004 and looks like a dinosaur these days. Despite the age, this truck is doing pretty well even today. On the other side, it was hard to expect the same thing for something that is still a little bit more passenger-oriented. So, the model was discontinued, due to several reasons. Of course, some of them were an outdated design, poor fuel economy, and similar things. Still, the biggest reason was a new wave in the automotive industry, the wave of crossovers which completely overflowed the market and occupied a huge percentage of total vehicles sales.

Three years after the discontinuation, Nissan’s engineers are allegedly working on a new model. If we consider that the Frontier is finally about to come with significant changes, this makes a lot of sense. A couple of years ago, the company definitely didn’t have enough potentials. Things are a little bit different these days. We expect to see a tight relationship between these two models once again. This leads us to another popular model from the Japanese manufacturer, the Navara.

Though unavailable on the U.S. market, this model is one of the company’s big money makers. It comes in various forms and also Nissan’s partners Mercedes-Benz and Renault have their vehicles based on this pickup truck. The current generation is on the market for about three years, and similar design language will find its way to new Frontier and 2019 Nissan Xterra models.

How will the 2019 Nissan Xterra look like?

If we can judge by the latest reports, expect a heavy inspirations from the abroad truck Navara. The new 2019 Nissan Xterra will utilize its platform, which will bring lots of improvements compared to the previous model. This refers not just to weight savings, but to overall efficiency, riding quality, off-road capabilities etc. Of course, count on a completely new styling too.
We can’t say how the new 2019 Nissan Xterra is going to look for sure, but there is no doubt that the front compartment of the vehicle will adopt the brand’s newest design language, famous for its V-Motion grille and a couple of other details. The Navara is waiting for a mid-cycle refresh and that is where all eyes are pointed when it comes to the Xterra’s new look. Rest of the SUV should come in a familiar, super-boxy layout, just like it was the case with the previous model.

Though it might look as not so important, this has actually been one of the essential aspects of the previous-generation models. Drivers of this SUV highly appreciate its body rear end, which brings a full batch of practicality. Not only that they count on plenty of cargo space, but such square shape also allows accommodation of large and bulky objects as well. When it comes to seating capacity, the base 2019 Nissan Xterra will most likely come with only two rows, while the third one should come as an option. Of course, expect to see a completely new interior layout. A new dashboard design, once again, inspired by the internationally-offered pickup truck, as well as a long list of latest tech features.

2019 Nissan Xterra Engines

It will be very interesting to see which engines will find the place under the hood of the new 2019 Nissan Xterra. As you may know, the previous model featured a  large 4.0-liter V6 with 265 horses. Despite plenty of power, it had one very weak side, fuel economy. Meanwhile, we haven’t seen anything newer that would potentially be a good choice for a body-on-frame SUV. So, there is a big chance to see the new 2019 Nissan Xterra with diesel units in the offer.
One of the potential candidates is a 2.3-liter diesel unit, which is good for about 190 hp and 330lb-ft. It is also very possible to see Mercedes-Benz’s 3.0-liter V6 diesel, which powers the X-Class. This engine is good for 255 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. Finally, expect one gasoline engine in the offer, probably one of the newer-generation V6 units from the Japanese manufacturer.
