After the facelift in 2019, we are not expecting big updates on the 2020 Ford Edge. This crossover SUV might get a new drivetrain, but cosmetically, it will be the same as its predecessor. So, the model for the 2020 season will carry over the new grille and front fascia look. Fresh paints are available both for interior and exterior. Upper trim levels now offer B&O sound system. Previous editions used Sony audio. All in all, Edge is still fresh and it doesn’t require special attention by designers.
Engineers will have more work. Currently, the crossover SUV is using two drivetrains. For the current season, Ford dropped a 3.5-liter V6 unit. Still, there are each of four- and six-cylinder engines in the offer. The upcoming 2020 Ford Edge will also add a hybrid system very probably. The US carmaker announced big plans about electrification. Escape Hybrid SUV is already confirmed. The next one to get such drivetrain will be Edge.
Drivetrain
Under the hood of the entry-level crossover is going to be a 2.0-liter turbo engine. This four-cylinder powertrain is capable to produce 250 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque. For a mid-size model, this is more than enough. Ford uses a new 8-speed transmission as the power router. Front-wheel drive is standard, while buyers can opt for an all-wheel drive setup. It consumes slightly more fuel, but AWD boosts balance, traction, and stability.
2020 Ford Edge ST
If 250 ponies are not enough for you, then the new 2020 Ford Edge ST will offer even more. A 2.7-liter V6 engine is paired with the twin-turbo system to create 335 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque. This monster is capable to compete with mid-size crossovers with high outputs. The same 8-speed transmission sends power to all wheels only. Fuel economy drops to 22 mpg combined. The configuration with turbo-four engine is returning 25/24 mpg with FWD/AWD.
Hybrid
In the future, we will definitely see the hybrid version of the crossover SUV. It is still unknown whether will 2020 Ford Edge be the one to introduce such powertrain. The US company announced that by 2030 all of its vehicles will have either hybrid or EV model. The first wave of these models arrives by 2022. The 2020 Edge would be one of the pioneers alongside Escape SUV. Its smaller stablemate is confirmed for the next season. Well, these two are sharing a 2.0-liter turbo engine. However, a 2.5-liter inline-four engine serves as the base in the Escape. If Edge arrives with a hybrid configuration, it will use this setup.
2020 Ford Edge Becomes a 7-Seater
The major update that could happen for the 2020 Ford Edge is to get more seating spots. Currently, the SUV is offering room for five occupants. The new mid-size model could seat seven persons. Well, the US company already has models in this class with three rows of seats. Explorer is a seven-seater, and Flex as well, although it is somewhere between a mid- and full-size segment.
If Ford decides to add a third row, then Edge would come with less cargo space. Behind the second row, there are 39 cubic feet. With rear seats folded, the SUV gains almost 35 cubic feet more. Another row would cause a revisit of the entire layout. Rear seats will be suitable only for children, and taller people could lack some legroom in the second row. So, these rumors are not so plausible, but still, Ford is not denying them.
Trim Levels, Features
The 2020 Edge will carry over trim levels from its predecessor. The entry-level model is SE. A 360-degree camera and 18-inch wheels are standard. Upper, SEL model will bring different rim design and more interior upgrades. Dual-zone automatic climate control and Sync3 multimedia system are available. Also, upholstery is still cloth, with unique details.
The 2020 Ford Edge Titanium is a premium model. It brings leather inside the SUV, as well as navigation, wireless charging spot, and B&O audio system. What’s more, seats are getting heating and cooling functions. The hands-free tailgate is a new feature available only for the Titanium model. Edge ST is not all about the new drivetrain. This version packs the cockpit with leather seats with unique details. Outside, we will find 20-inch wheels, largest in the lineup. Black grille with ST badge and fog lights are standard up front. Also, this version adds Ford Co-Pilot360system and extra package “Equipment Group 400A”.
2020 Ford Edge Prices
The new 2020 Ford Edge will cost the same as its predecessor. The mid-size model is available for $30,000. The SEL model costs $33,500 and Platinum adds $5,000. For the top of the range, Edge ST buyers must pay at least $39,000. If Ford introduces a hybrid engine, it will be available for all but ST model. Hybrid drivetrain will add $2k-3k to the base price. All-wheel drive upgrade costs $2,000. If you pack the ST model with additional equipment, it will easily breach the $50k mark.
