Currently, the company uses the name Vitara without the prefix. The SUV has the “Grand” included in its name during the second and third generation. Now, Suzuki plans new refreshes, and one of them will be the name switch to the best-known title. The 2020 Suzuki Grand Vitara will start the new series of SUVs when it enters the market next season.
The new styling will be the highlight of the 2020 Suzuki Grand Vitara. Besides that, the company is updating interior, seats, storage area, infotainment system, safety. Under the hood is the same lineup. The crossover SUV will also get the hybrid drivetrain, thanks to the partnership with Toyota. This alliance is created to boost the production of electric vehicles by both companies.
The new version of the Grand Vitara will upgrade the previous edition in every way. The company announced that the starting price is going to be the same, while the crossover is getting more trim levels. A new member of the lineup could also be a 1.0-liter engine. All in all, the vehicle is going to be worth of waiting.
2020 Suzuki Grand Vitara Drivetrains
Under the bonnet of the 2020 Suzuki Grand Vitara is going to be five different engines. The new model will carry over the existing lineup, with the new 1.0 motor and hybrid system on the way. The small displacement is perfect for a city ride and if you want to go outside the town, this is not the best solution for longer trips.
The base powertrain in most markets will be a 1.4-liter four-cylinder mill. This drivetrain is tuned to produce high outputs for the Grand Vitara (140 hp). Compared to some other model, that is 40 ponies more. The drivetrain is not too quick since it needs nearly 10 seconds to reach 60 mph with 160 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual transmission sends the energy to front wheels. All-wheel drive is optional, and we still don’t know if this engine is going to pair an automatic gearbox.
The other petrol choice is a 1.6-liter four-pot with 95 horsepower. During the last 20 years, this engine had numerous revisits. The latest tuning also adds 100 lb-ft of torque, which makes the 2020 Suzuki Grand Vitara accelerate 0-60 mph in 12 seconds and achieves the max speed of 95 mph (150 kmh). The engine is mated to a five-speed manual transmission for the current edition. However, the company will update the gearbox to get better outputs and gas mileage.
Diesel and Hybrid Models
Besides the standard petrol drivetrain, the new 2020 Suzuki Grand Vitara will get diesel and hybrid power. A 1.6-liter engine is capable to crunch more power and torque than its petrol sibling. With a diesel, drivers can count on 120 hp and 235 lb-ft of torque, 0-60 mph acceleration in 11 seconds, and a max speed of 111 mph (180 kmh). It is the most popular engine in the lineup and the company will work to squeeze more out of it.
On the other hand, if Suzuki wants a ticket for the US market, it needs a more efficient unit. That means more power, less consumption and emissions. A hybrid drivetrain meets all these requirements. In combination with an electric motor, both petrol solutions will gain extra energy. At the same time, a push by a battery power will reduce pollution. And finally, the electric energy saves conventional gasoline burn and increases the fuel economy. We still don’t know exactly, but the company will probably attach this electric unit to the larger 1.6-liter petrol mill.
Redesign and Changes
For the new generation, the 2020 Suzuki Grand Vitara is getting a fresh styling. The redesign is big, but the crossover SUV keeps its well-known shapes. Well, Vitara has always been boxy. So it will be in the future. However, designers will make it more aerodynamic with new edges and lower stance. On the other hand, off-road capabilities of the compact crossover are now under a question mark, with larger vehicles dominating this market. Still, the Grand Vitara manages to survive and continue the battle in the 4×4 segment.
Interior also needs a revisit if the 2020 Suzuki Grand Vitara wants to conquer major markets. It is available in Europe and Japan, but buyers are getting more from its rivals. The main advantage of the crossover is its price. But, everyone wants a more comfortable ride and extra options. Suzuki offers a lot of equipment, but experts are not considering the Japanese company as a rival to other carmakers from the same country (Honda, Nissan, Toyota).
2020 Suzuki Grand Vitara Release Date
The vehicle is coming early next year. We still don’t know which markets will offer the next-gen crossover, but the European fans can be sure the new model is on the way. Also, the partnership with Toyota will make its life easier in the new hybrid segment. The main rivals to this model are Honda HR-V, Hyundai Kona, and Toyota C-HR.
