The 2021 Hyundai Kona is the smallest model the Korean company is going to offer. Its versatility comes from a wide choice of options. For example, you can choose between conventional and electric drivetrain. Plus, the next update is going to bring the performance-oriented model. Of course, the company saves some surprises for the premiere, but we believe the look will also suffer a lot.

Fun fact: the existing all-electric Kona comes with the longest range. With 290 miles in a single charge, no other vehicle can cope with this distance. The new edition will hardly beat this, but we can always expect surprises, especially now when other companies are announcing 300-mile cars and crossovers.

We don’t know too much about the redesign. Well, the crossover is going to get a new look and one of the existing concepts will borrow some interesting solutions for front fascia and wheel designs. Still, the subcompact vehicle is not too spacious and it will never be. If you are looking for extra space, then larger Tucson or Santa Fe are options.

2021 Hyundai Kona Electric Range

Hyundai Kona is well-known for its electric engine. The company is a leader in this segment thanks to a range of 290 miles. No other car comes even close. Thanks to the 64-kWh battery, you get the extended distance in a single charge and 200 hp + 290 lb-ft of torque. Regarding the recharging – you can refill the battery in 10 hours. However, using the standard outlets, the time jumps to 60 hours. Quick recharge on the 240V station takes 50 minutes to get 80 percent. The alternatives to this model are the Kia Niro, Nissan Leaf, and more expensive Tesla Model 3.

Conventional Drivetrains

The smallest displacement under the hood of the 2021 Hyundai Kona is a 1.0-liter unit. However, the company is not offering this powertrain in the US. With 120 hp and 127 lb-ft of torque, it is perfect for the subcompact vehicle. The manual gearbox is a power router for this turbocharged mill. Outside the United States, buyers usually pick a diesel model. A 1.6-liter engine is good for 135 horsepower and 220 lb-ft and transfers this energy through a manual case.

The biggest market in the world brings a boost. A 2.0-liter drivetrain is good for 150 horsepower and sends them to front wheels through a six-speed manual transmission. The all-wheel drive consumes significantly more fuel, so the carmaker needs to focus on this segment. Many drivers prefer extra balance and traction from an AWD system.

The most potent engine in the lineup is a 1.6-liter turbocharged-four. It is capable to create 175 hp and 195 lb-ft of twist. Again, all-wheel drive is an optional and higher consumption of gasoline.

Hybrid and Performance N Model

These are the new versions that should take place in the 2021 Hyundai Kona model. Well, some say this could be one vehicle. The Kappa Hybrid concept is perfect for the subcompact crossover. The system can add some power to the base 1.6-liter petrol unit and help it reach 150 hp and 200 lb-ft. still, there is no official info about this configuration.

This is not enough for the 2021 Hyundai Kona N model. The performance-oriented model is officially announced. Tucson is also on the way with special upgrades. Even test mules of two crossovers are spotted being tested in Germany. According to insider stories, the Kona N is getting power from a 2.0-liter turbo-four and the energy could go up to 275 hp and torque reaches 260 pound-feet.  This is not anything new since the system is already used for the Hyundai Veloster.

2021 Hyundai Kona Redesign

All we know about the 2021 Hyundai Kona is what is seen on the N prototype. This model is going to be based on the standard version. Of course, numerous upgrades won’t change its overall look. The crossover is not gaining extra length. The subcompact vehicle won’t be longer than 165 inches. Better organization of the interior space could help, but not too much. The base model is not offering too many features either. Upper trim levels are richer and come with more options and prices.

2021 Hyundai Kona Prices

The SEL model comes with blind-spot monitors and an additional $2,000 over the base price. SEL Plus adds another two grand and premium audio and leather seats.
