The CX-7 was a mid-size crossover SUV that Mazda replaced with the CX-5. This was a great move for the company and the new model immediately made an impact. Well, the CX-5 is smaller and the compact segment in a way more popular. But, its success leads to the expansion of the lineup. It also made the Japanese company think of 2021 Mazda CX-7 comeback.
Currently, we find space between CX-5 and CX-9 for the new SUV. The manufacturer also has the CX-8, but this one is reserved only for a few markets, and the 2021 Mazda CX-7 could be the worldwide edition. The size will fit between the two siblings since the compact model 5 inches shorter than CX-7 used to be.
The comeback is not official yet, but the company is sending some signals about the expanding the lineup. It was enough to start the rumor mill. Experts believe that a new SUV could be a mid-size two-row model. Also, some hints are indicating Mazda could turn it into a coupe crossover SUV. Finally, we can expect more hybrid units based on the SkyActiv technology. Well, we believe the CX-5 will be the first one to get such a configuration, as the best-selling model in the family.

2021 Mazda CX-7 Dimensions
Before the discontinuation, the CX-7 had only a single generation that lasted for six years. The company cut this nameplate in 2012 and back then, it was 184 inches long. Mazda brought a six-inches shorter CX-5 to the market. The second generation is slightly larger. The CX-9 is nearly 200 inches long, with a room for three rows of seats. Also, the length of the limited CX-8 is 192 inches.
So, the new 2021 Mazda CX-7 will be somewhere 185-190 inches, that is for sure. That will bring a vehicle bigger than CX-5 and still capable to provide enough room for cargo and passengers. The SUV is not going to gain extra length in case Mazda expands the lineup to the full-size market and make CX-8 available in more markets. The CX-7 will be the mid-size model with two rows of seats. It also leaves room for the coupe design, which will definitely harm the space at the back.
Coupe SUV
This kind of cabin is familiar to fans of the premium crossovers and SUVs. We can find more of coupe bodies in the luxury segment, but it is not so frequent in the standard offer. Mazda already offers an aggressive appearance and its back is more aggressive than on its rivals. However, the classic coupe style will improve the aerodynamics and performance of the new SUV. Furthermore, this will be the all-new project and offer for fans and enthusiasts. The downside would be a lack of space for passengers in the second row. Also, the cargo space will radically drop. With the standard body style, we could expect to get 30-40 cubic feet of cargo capacity. That is somewhere between its siblings. However, if the body style is going to be a coupe, the volume will drop under 25 cu.ft.

2021 Mazda CX-7 Specs
If the turbo-four unit is underachieving for the CX-9, it will be perfect for the smaller model. The mid-size model will get enough power from a 2.5-liter drivetrain. Loaded with premium fuel, it can deliver 250 hp. If you don’t want to spend extra, the powerplant will return 225 horses. Also, you will get 310 pound-feet of torque. Mazda is well-known for its SkyActiv technology. Engines built this way take the best from both petrol and diesel powertrains. They produce enough power, return good fuel economy numbers and have good emission records. We believe the new 2021 Mazda CX-7 will be able to return between 23 and 25 mpg combined, depending on a drive it uses. Front wheels are going to get power by default and AWD is optional service.
Diesel vs Hybrid
Most companies are turning to greener sources of power. Even the Japanese car manufacturer goes this way and last year we saw the first hybrid crossover. But, the development is expensive and Mazda will try to find a partner to make the progress faster. Meanwhile, a diesel unit is still part of the lineup for the compact CX-5. A 2.2-liter turbo-four mill could be carried over for the 2021 Mazda CX-7. It lacks power (170 hp), but the torque and towing capacity will make it up. The turbodiesel drivetrain bursts 290 lb-ft of torque. Besides that, the carmaker still keeps this powerhouse because of its exceptional fuel economy, which reaches 30 mpg on open roads.

2021 Mazda CX-7 Release Date
The return of the SUV is not confirmed yet. But, the carmaker will look to expand the lineup and there are a few free slots available. There is another free nameplate, CX-6, but compared to the 2021 Mazda CX-7, we can’t find any rumors about this version. So, let’s hope the company will provide more details about the comeback by mid-2020.
