If Mazda adds another mid-size SUV, the CX-9 could become the full-size model. Well, the vehicle is already 200 inches long, which is longer than some big rigs from this category. However, there is no official source to confirm the arrival of the CX-7. Either way, the 2021 Mazda CX-9 will need an update, since the three-row SUV category is more popular now and many companies launched new vehicles recently.
The main advantage of the 2021 Mazda CX-9 will be its size. With 200 inches, there is enough room for passengers in all three rows. Designers still leave space for cargo as well. Drive system is another reason why you should give the CX-9 a chance. SkyActiv is one of the most advanced technologies in the market and the SUV rides extremely well, especially having in mind its size. The interior is making a difference with the quality of materials, even at entry-level trims.

2021 Mazda CX-9 Redesign
There are a few things the 2021 Mazda CX-9 needs to improve compared to its predecessor. First of all, there is a matter of safety. The visibility is not great. Not only that front view is problematic, but the SUV could use some rear-view cameras to improve safety. The new look of the CX-9 will make it more aggressive and aerodynamic. The company aims a younger population, but also the fuel economy improvements. Still, the small displacement is already returning excellent gas mileage, but the major lack is low towing capacity.
Mazda will update the mid-size model, but the highlights will be the same. The characteristic front fascia is making a strong appearance and designers can make it only larger. The refresh of headlights and bumpers will make the nose seem to be different. We don’t know a precise plan, but chiefs already announced that lighter materials will be used for body panels in the future, not only for the 2021 Mazda CX-9 but also for other crossovers. It means that SUV goes on a diet, but it is not affecting performance and handling.

2021 Mazda CX-9 Interior
Probably the most updates are coming for the cabin of the 2021 Mazda CX-9. The vehicle is spacious, but the room is not used efficiently previously. The SUV is comfortable, but it lacks some cargo space compared to its smaller rivals. The redesign will bring a new layout, but the CX-9 remains a seven-seater. Higher trim levels will offer captain’s chairs for the middle-row, which downgrades the seating capacity to six.
This model is among leaders in the segment with its infotainment, safety, and driver-assist features. So, it won’t be too hard to maintain the position. But, the Japanese carmaker is always trying to bring advanced options to its customers. That is why we expect a lot from the 2021 Mazda CX-9 after the redesign. The SUV already offers integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Plus, you will find a few USB ports and Bose audio. That is not all, since the cabin is pretty comfortable and quiet. Mazda has been working on voice commands recently and the company is catching up with the competition. Other controls are also easy to use.
Trim Levels
The base 2021 Mazda CX-9 will remain the Sport with 18-inch alloy wheels. Plus, the entry-level package is offering a tri-zone air-conditioning system, rain-sensing wipers, and Mazda’s i-Activsense safety bundle. On Touring trim you will find Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard options, and leather will improve comfort of seats. The front row is power-adjustable. A nine-inch touchscreen is the highlight of the control panel.
The Grand Touring SUV spices it up with ventilated first row buckets and heated steering wheel. Larger wheels and power moonroof are premium features on this version. But, that is not the best the 2021 Mazda CX-9 can offer. Nappa leather remains available only for the Signature trim. Plus, there are unique trims inside the cabin and the second row replaces bench with captain’s chairs.

2021 Mazda CX-9 Specs
The drivetrain is probably the major lack of the mid-size SUV. Although 200 inches long, the vehicle is using a turbo-four powerplant. Its 250 hp is just not enough even for the mid-size segment. Mazda will have to think about serious upgrades under the hood to stay competitive. A 2.5-liter turbo engine is also producing 310 lb-ft of torque, which is better than most other SUVs in the same class. But, the CX-9 is not getting extra towing capacity. On the contrary, it stuck at 3,500 pounds.
Price
The MSRP of the 2021 Mazda CX-9 will jump a bit after the redesign, especially if the SUV gets a new engine. It is already one of the most expensive mid-size models in the market with the starting price at $35,000. Signature trim will end up just above $50k, leaving enough room for pricing other trims between these two ends.
