2021 Mazda CX-5 Redesign, Changes, Rumors, Hybrid

2021 Mazda CX-5

It is time for the first big update on Mazda’s flagship model. The compact crossover class is the most popular in the market. The 2021 Mazda CX-5 will be more aggressive than ever, which will help it boost sales. Besides the cosmetic upgrades, the new crossover will get the hybrid engine as well.

The competition is very tough. The best-sellers are achieving more than 400k sales. These are Toyota Rav4 and Honda CR-V. Also, Nissan Rogue and Ford Escape are also growing. Other notable players in the segment are Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Compass, and Subaru Forester. If you want to posh up your ride, Lexus NX, BMW X3, or Acura RDX could be an interesting alternative.

Some of the reasons you should wait for the new 2021 Mazda CX-5 are excellent driving skills and handling. Well, the SkyActiv technology is there to make the ride smooth. There is also plenty of room for both passengers and cargo. The interior is elegant and nearly premium.

2021 Mazda CX-5 Changes

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 will go through a redesign. Spy photos are not available yet, but the car will take some novelties from the most recent launches. For example, we can compare it to the latest CX-30. Also, the company could bring back the CX-7.

Interior and Trim Levels

A couple of things are certain – the CX-5 will step up with several trim levels. Top of the class models will be able to compete with luxurious crossovers. Well, the price is there too. But, let’s start from the base trim. It is Sport and the entry-level offer brings 17-inch wheels and LED headlights. Inside, buyers will find cloth seats. The center of infotainment is a seven-inch touchscreen display. Also, driver-aid technology is pretty advanced.

Leatherette seats are making Touring trim nearly luxurious, while the real leather on Grand Touring definitely is a premium offer. Dual-zone climate control and more USB ports are included in the package. Grand Touring also adds power moonroof and power liftgate. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto become available for Touring, while the higher trim comes with premium audio by Bose.

Grand Touring Reserve will boost the performance with the turbo engine and AWD. Still, there are a few notable upgrades for the interior, such as heated seats and advanced safety systems. The 2021 Mazda CX-5 Signature will also suffer changes compared to the current edition to bring all the latest features to the lineup. Most options are standard for this trim, including navigation, smart systems, and a 360-degree camera.

2021 Mazda CX-5 Specs

The variety of engines are the strong side of the CX-5. Naturally-aspirated, turbocharged, and diesel powerplants will make the offer for any kind of buyer. The base unit is a 2.5-liter inline-four, which comes with the class-average 187 hp and 185 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed transmission is a power router that sends energy to front wheels. Optionally, you will find an AWD, while the manual gearbox is no longer available.

While the power output is on par with rivals, the fuel economy is exceptional. The SkyActiv technology is making gasoline engines work as diesel. Emissions are low, and the gas mileage reaches 28 mpg combined. With the AWD, the mileage drops by one point.

CX-5 Turbo

If you are seeking for more power, then you check the 2021 Mazda CX-5 Turbo on Grand Touring trim level. This unit will be able to deliver 250 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque, but it requires premium gasoline. Otherwise, the regular gas can’t do better than 227 hp. All-wheel drive is exclusive and the combination consumes 22/27 mpg. The same six-speed transmission is paired with the engine for a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 lbs.

Diesel Engine

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 diesel will be one of the most interesting models in the market. SkyActiv technology is cutting emissions on this powerplant. Buyers will find 27/30 mpg definitely worth of try. On the other hand, the turbocharged 2.2-liter unit can make 170 hp and 290 pound-feet of twist. Again, all-wheel drive is an only option, while this diesel setup is available only at higher trims.

2021 Mazda CX-5 Hybrid

To stay competitive, the 2021 Mazda CX-5 will have to bring a diesel engine. The fuel economy of a 2.5 SkyActiv engine is superb, but the best in class crossovers can make more than 40 mpg. Well, Mazda will have to work a lot to catch up with the Toyota Rav4 and Honda CR-V. But, the hybrid configuration will make the CX-5 a step closer to the stardom of the compact crossover class.

Release Date

Soon, we will know more about the new 2021 Mazda CX-5 and its changes. The company will launch it in the final months of the year. Before that, fans expect to hear more about the hybrid engine and its mileage.
