The 2020 Cadillac XT3 will be a new concept. It will take the position as the smallest crossover SUV by GM’s premium brand. The XT lineup is going to expand in the next couple of years, and the XT3 is part of the future. Well, next year we will see only a preview of what we should expect. The production of this all-new crossover is not expected before 2021 or even 2022. By then, the new XT4 and XT6 should be ready for first updates. The flagship model XT5 will enter the new generation.
For a long time, Cadillac had only its Escalade as the only SUV. However, with the expansion of popularity, the premium name expanded the offer. First, we saw the XT5 crossover SUV. This one succeeded very fast, so General Motors decided to build more crossovers and SUVs with XT badge. Now, it is time to think about further expansion to subcompact level or even sportier compact class. The new XT4 takes the position there. The 2020 Cadillac XT3 could be its coupe version.
2020 Cadillac XT3 Drivetrains
If the 2020 Cadillac XT3 becomes a coupe version of its larger XT4 model, then it will use the same engine as its stablemate. It is a 2.0-liter turbo-four drivetrain that is capable to produce 240 hp. A nine-speed automatic transmission converts this power to wheels. The torque of the new crossover will be around 260 lb-ft and it will be capable to tow 3,500 lbs. the new XT3 will be lighter than the XT4, so it is expected to be more efficient. The older one returns 24/30 mpg for city / highway drive. The XT3 will add at least 1 mpg for each segment.
On the other hand, if the 2020 Cadillac XT3 takes the position in the subcompact segment, it can keep only the transmission. We are not sure if it will use an all-wheel drive for this class. A smaller unit will produce much less power than the 2.0-liter turbocharged mill. Rivals in this class are pumping out up to 200 hp. Lexus UX offers 170 hp, and Volvo XC40 – 190 horsepower.
Hybrid Crossover
Cadillac is working on hybridization of its lineup as well. The new Escala concept gives this possibility to all new models that will be based on it. However, the 2020 Cadillac XT3 could be the first unit to get this kind of engine when it enters production. Well, we will know more when the company announces plans for the Caddies smallest crossover.
With a hybrid drivetrain, the XT3 could raise up its fuel economy to 40 mpg combined. It sounds impossible, but this subcompact model is not going to consume too much gasoline even with the conventional configuration. The same transmission and drive options will be available for XT3 hybrid. However, we still don’t know what kind of petrol unit could be under its hood.
Escala Concept
2020 Cadillac XT3 Styling
The new 2020 Cadillac XT3 will use a lot of design solutions from the new Escala concept. Well, it is shown as a sports car, but it can be also used for crossovers and larger SUVs. The upcoming XT6 sibling will present some features and details borrowed from this concept. Also, the large Escalade in adding equipment we saw on the new platform. However, Escala’s ideas will underpin most of the Cadillac XT3. Aggressive and futuristic exterior must be eye-catching to cope with Lexus’ new subcompact crossover. Lights, wheels, and roofline design should stun everyone thinking of the purchase of a subcompact crossover.
Interior is packed with the latest features. Of course, connectivity with modern gadgets is one of the priorities. Besides the Bluetooth, the 2020 Cadillac XT3 will offer Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and many other apps. A large screen at the center of a dashboard and digital cluster will be highlighted. Everything inside the XT3 will be new and never seen before. Infotainment system will get premium audio. Still, the company will leave some room for upgrades with additional options, such as navigation, or more speakers.
Safety is also in focus, especially since this is a small crossover. Vehicles in this segment are not rated as good as its larger siblings. However, GM will put extra effort to help the driver with smart functions. We believe lane departure warning and front sensors will be a good start. More advanced technologies are waiting in additional packages.
2020 Cadillac XT3 Release Date, Price
The new 2020 Cadillac XT3 will not be available for purchase any time soon. The company could make a premiere of the all-new crossover, but the production will start late in 2020. So, the XT3 likely appears as a 2021 season model. Still, this is enough time for development, since buyers are occupied with new XT4 and XT6.
The price of the 2020 Cadillac XT3 will be under the cheapest XT crossover. Currently, it is XT4, priced at $35,000. We can expect the new XT3 to cost around $32,000.
