The 2021 Ford Expedition is the biggest model in the family. The new Explorer is slightly larger, but it can’t measure with this monster. The SUV can take up to eight passengers. The new season is not going to bring radical changes, since the current version is still hot. However, the company announced a hybrid drivetrain for its big rigs, and the Expedition is one of these which can become electrified.
Besides the hybrid engine, there is another possibility for the 2021 Ford Expedition. A diesel powerplant would be something fans can’t wait to see. However, the company is not making it official. The SUV would use the same unit as the Ford F-150 truck, the vehicle with whom it shares the platform.
Premium versions of Expedition model are Titanium and possibly Limited. These are going to match the offer of the base Lincoln Navigator. The non-premium SUV also offers the extended variant with more space inside. You will find this one as the Expedition MAX. Currently, this is the longest available model in the market, until the Excursion comes back.
V6 Specs
Unlike the other SUVs in the full-size class, the 2021 Ford Expedition is not going to exploit a V8 engine. The Blue Oval company and its engineers are making the special offer with a V6 drivetrain. Well, it won’t make the SUV less capable. Twin-turbo system will produce more power than most of the V8 mills available for Nissan Armada, Chevy Tahoe, or Toyota Sequoia.
A 3.5-liter petrol engine is the base for the setup. Total output of the system is 450 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque. Some say that engineers could go even higher and up to 500 hp. Still, this is not going to make a difference. Towing capacity is going to remain at 6,500 pounds. Well, properly equipped, it becomes the best in class SUV with 9,500 lbs.
2021 Ford Expedition Diesel
Ford is already on the market with the diesel engine. As soon as it became available in the F-150 truck, the speculations about its further usage started. All the big rigs are favorites to land the new drivetrain. The 2021 Ford Expedition is probably the most likely one, since the SUV is based on the pickup.
A 3.0-liter PowerStroke unit is capable to produce 250 hp and 440 lb-ft. Interesting, this is the least powerful unit in the new diesel lineup for full-size pickup trucks. Both Chevy and Ram are using more capable powerplants. Still, the Powerstroke turbodiesel V6 is still good as the fuel-saver. Also, the towing capacity is getting a slight boost. We can’t predict either of these before the company makes it official. If there is a scale, we would say there are 8/10 chances for the unit to appear for the 2021 Ford Expedition.
Hybrid
Similar to the diesel engine, the hybrid is also going to happen sooner or later. Well, here the carmaker confirmed the engine, but chiefs are not speaking about the release date. A full-size hybrid SUV is still a dream for all US companies. Ford is a step ahead of GM and FCA, since the Blue Oval company invested a lot of funds into electrification. General Motors is yet to deliver a mid-size SUV with PHEV or hybrid system.
2021 Ford Expedition Cargo Space, MAX
The 2021 Ford Expedition Max is an extended SUV with extra space in the back. It is a competitor to Chevy Suburban. The model is not going to grow, so expect the same dimensions. The base version is 210 inches long, while the Max is extending the body for 12 inches. Wheelbase is also gaining 9 inches (122/131 in).
The standard configuration offers 21/64/105 cubic feet of cargo space. Converted to interior room, 12 inches longer version adds 16 cubic feet. With a towing capacity of 9,300 pounds, this is enough for some serious hauling on the par with some pickup trucks.
2021 Ford Expedition Prices
The 2021 Ford Expedition will be available in all standard trims as its predecessors. That means the base offer is an XLT trim and the $53,000 price tag. Limited edition adds $10k, as well as he King Ranch. Platinum is slightly more expensive. All-wheel drive will cost $2,500. With additional packages and options, the cost of the vehicle will reach $83,000. Extended Max SUV costs $3,000 more than the standard version and it is available with the same trim levels.
We expect news about hybrid and diesel options, which will update the price of the SUV. Well, the diesel is not expected to be more expensive than the twin-turbo V6 petrol unit. On the other hand, implementation of hybrid technology is expensive. This is the stumbling block for engineers and the carmaker. If this is not an issue, we would be probably seeing these models on streets already. The 2021 Ford Expedition will follow the electrification process of F-150 truck. So, follow these news as well to find out more about the hybrid SUV.
