During next year, Mercedes will present its new GLS Class. The Full-size luxury SUV is already one of the most advanced models in the market. The next edition will set some challenges to its rivals – Land Rover Range Rover, BMW X7, and Lexus LX 570. However, the German carmaker is preparing an ultra-luxurious high-output top of the class version, 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLS 63. It was caught testing for the first time.

The AMG is a jewel in every MB’s lineup. Of course, the largest SUV is the most expensive one, packed with the most powerful engine, and the latest features. The new model will get a lot of visual solutions from the latest Panamericana design language. We can see these examples on other models, but the large SUV is making everything bolder and more aggressive. Signature details on every part of the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 and a twin-turbo V8 engine are things that will make this model so distinctive and better from the rest of the lineup.

2021 Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 Specs and Hybrid

The old GLS AMG model used a 5.5-liter V8 engine. It was capable to deliver 577 hp. But, when you are trying to be the best, you will always look for further options and upgrades. This time, the German carmaker is about to stun the entire industry by downgrading the engine for its top model! From now on, the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 will use a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 powertrain that delivers 490 hp and 515 lb-ft of torque. BUT! The company also adds a hybrid system called EQ Boost that will increase the outputs to 603 hp and 665 pound-feet of torque. So, the smaller engine can produce more energy. A nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive are there to handle the power. Still, we don’t have estimations of 0-60 mph acceleration or top speed.

Other Drivetrains

The new 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 could also get a larger engine. Rumors are mentioning a 6.0-liter displacement. Experts say this one is capable to raise the bar in every possible way. The AMG would be more dominant than ever with 621 hp and 750 lb-ft of twist. Some even say the German engineers can push it even further and create a beast of 800+ hp. It sounds like a fairytale, but Mercedes presented a GT concept with similar possibilities.

Panamericana Design Underpins 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLS 63

The engine changes are big. But, it is not the only huge change coming for the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLS 63. The luxury SUV will be eye-catching, aggressive, and it will offer plenty of space. The German company will implement a lot of features and design solutions from the Panamericana concept. The first thing we will notice is the front grille. However, the new GLS will have a lot of unique upgrades and it seems to be bigger than before. The company is not releasing exact details, and we have a concept image and a couple of spy photos.

Well, this is enough to make some conclusions. The front fascia has larger air intakes than the standard version. At the back, there are square exhaust tips, which are standard for the most AMG models. Of course, large tires with massive brakes are also something that draws attention. The rest of the body is covered, so we can’t know what lays behind the camouflage.

AMG vs Maybach GLS

The 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 may compete with Range Rover until some point. But, the level of luxury and performance in British SUV exceeds the reach of most competitors. Even the G-Class can’t catch up with this JLR’s product. But, Mercedes has a plan to get into a market where SUVs cost $200,000. The most luxurious versions of the GLS will carry the Maybach badge. Well, the premium brand sells a larger part of its vehicles in China. So, we expect this model to debut in this market before other countries get it as well.

2021 Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 Release Date in the USA, Prices

The GLS Class is entering a new era. Its redesign will present a lot of new features during next season. The company didn’t release a statement about its launch. However, late this year we could see the premiere at LA auto show. Sales will start next year, and shortly after that, we will see its most exciting version – 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLS 63.

The base model is going to cost around $75,000. However, upgrades, such as the hybrid drivetrain will make the cost go up. In this case, we expect a bump of at least $55,000. So, the new AMG 63 version will cost a minimum of $130k. If you are looking for a slightly less expensive alternative, then BMW X7M could be a solution. If you are ready to spend even more, then you should look for the Range Rover SVR or wait for a Maybach version of the Mercedes GLS.
