The subcompact crossover SUV is not wasting any time. After the release in 2018, the new Volvo XC40 is ready for the next model. Next season will bring all-electric drivetrain, and that is the major update for 2020. Besides that, there is no need for any other changes. The 2020 Volvo XC40 will carry over styling, trim level, and options from its predecessor. The luxury crossover competes with likes of BMW X1, Mercedes GLA, and Lexus UX. None of them is offering an EV model, so Volvo takes the first step. Expect a quick response from other companies.
The 2020 Volvo XC40 is a versatile crossover. Do not be upset with its latest award – Women’s car of the year 2018. It suits well both men and women, or young and old. It is the third model in the XC lineup. Volvo plans to expand its offer. Until new vehicles arrive, the crossover/SUV segment will offer XC40, XC60, and the all-new XC90 SUV, based on the Monograph concept.
2020 Volvo XC40 All-Electric Model Ready For the Production
The company confirmed the 2020 Volvo XC40 EV for the next season. However, we still lack details about this drivetrain. The company entered the electrification project that will last until 2025. The first wave will bring more EVs, that will help the Swedish company boost sales of these models. The first steps are made, and Volvo introduced the Polestar 2 EV model as its electric sub-brand.
We can look for clues there. The Polestar 2 is able to deliver 410 hp and 490 lb-ft of torque. The range of the concept vehicle is 275 miles. That is the value we expect from the 2020 Volvo XC40. Be sure the crossover won’t go under 250 miles in a single charge. The Polestar project offered a lot of modules, and this output is the best one. Of course, the XC40 will use some lighter variants of the 78-kWh battery.
Drivetrain Lineup
So, the new all-electric engine will join the lineup next season. Currently, the subcompact crossover is using three petrol and two diesel units. T3 is the base engine. It is a 1.5-liter displacement with three cylinders. Buyers of this version can count on 155 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. All engines in the lineup are coming with turbochargers. So, T4 variant can produce 190 hp and 220 lb-ft of torque. The same 2.0-l unit is tuned for the T5 system. In this case, the output ranges from 245-250 hp, while torque stays put at 260 lb-ft. All-wheel drive is standard for T5, optional for T4, and unavailable for T3.
Diesel range offers only D3 and D4. These models are not coming to the US market. On the other side of the ocean, these are pretty popular. The D3 can produce 150 hp and 235 lb-ft. Diesel units are also turbocharged. A 2.0-liter displacement consumes less fuel than its petrol sibling. It is also available in D4 configuration that adds 40 hp and 60 lb-ft of twist.
2020 Volvo XC40 Interior, Trim Levels
As we got used to with Volvo, the new XC40 will be as comfortable always. Well, the subcompact crossover is not offering plenty of space. However, infotainment and safety systems will improve the ride quality, and make trips shorter. Well, we haven’t seen it yet, but Volvo plans to install a Netflix-like app in this model. Can the next crossover bring it? We will see.
Still, the 2020 Volvo XC40 will come with some of the most advanced features in the automotive world. The electric model will get a Level 3 of autonomous drive. Volvo is catching up with leaders in this segment, Tesla. Fans don’t have to wait for the response by the US carmaker – they already announced improvements on their system.
The 2020 Volvo XC40 will be very transparent. A 12-inch dashboard screen helps a lot. A 9-inch touchscreen display is a center of the infotainment system. Vertical air vents are next to it. There are three trim levels available. The base crossover is Momentum. R-Design adds larger wheels and navigation. Top of the class model is Inscription. With it, your XC40 gets a moonroof and unique interior details, such as wood inlays and crystal gearshift knob.
2020 Volvo XC40 Prices and EV Release Date
The base crossover costs $34,000. You will have to add $2,500 for R-Design or $4,500 for Inscription. How much will 2020 Volvo XC40 EV cost we still don’t know. Again, we can compare it to the Polestar 2 EV. After the upgrade from the Plug-in hybrid variant, this model costs $63,000. XC40 could add a small discount. We expect to see the electric version by the end of this year. The debut will definitely happen at some of the biggest car shows in the world. In the last quarter of each season, we are getting big news from Frankfurt, Tokyo, or LA. This year Paris Motor Show is on break.
