The second generation of the X4 compact coupe-crossover made an immediate impact on the market. The Bavarian company didn’t wait for too long for the first update. Well, the base 2020 BMW X4 is not going to suffer any changes, but the lineup is getting a reinforcement. If you were missing the M package, it is coming for the new X4. A performance-oriented version is being tested together with its close sibling, X3. First spy photos are not unveiling too much, but it is enough to prove the X4M crossover is coming.
The 2020 BMW X4 is still fresh, with a lot of advanced technology inside. However, there is still room for upgrades. Small cosmetic modifications will draw attention. But still, the change of the next edition is the M model. It takes the position as the top of the range offer with the most powerful engine. Under the hood of the base crossover will be a 2.0-liter turbo-four. Engineers are working on improvements for fuel economy. So, we can expect a more efficient configuration.
2020 BMW X4 Specs
Under the bonnet of the 2020 BMW X4 remains the same old reliable 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine. This drivetrain can create 240 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. It also consumes a lot of fuel for its size. The X4 returns 20/28 mpg for city/highway drive. Well, the company combines the engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission and the full-time all-wheel drive. More traction means higher consumption.
The 2020 X4 crossover will be able to tow 4,400 pounds, but with a V6 engine. A 3.0-liter unit is paired with the same gearbox. Again, the M40i unit is sending power to all wheels as its smaller option. The consumption is higher, of course, as well as the outputs. The 3.0 engine can produce 355 hp and 340 lb-ft of torque. Well, these numbers are going up for the 2020 BMW X4 M, but we will check this one out later in this review.
2020 BMW X4 Features, Styling
The shape of the new 2020 BMW X4 is definitely eye-catching. Based on the X3, the X4 modifies some shapes to create an even more aggressive appearance. A coupe-like version of its stablemate completes the lineup. We can see similar solutions for X5 and X6, and the new X7 and X8 SUVs. The 2020 X4 will come with the same technology and equipment as before. Still, this is the high-end model that will meet all standards of a luxurious ride. A 10-inch touchscreen display is the biggest indicator of what you can expect of this crossover.
Well, the sloped roof is definitely a problem. Less cargo space, headroom is tight, not only for taller persons, and the rearview vision is not the greatest. But, designers are not setting these changes as priorities for the next season. Instead, we will see only an updated infotainment system. Styling is over functionality, and it stays so for 2020 BMW X4. If the crossover SUV lacks space, then we can’t have any objections on materials used for seats and upholstery.
2020 BMW X4 M
With the 2020 BMW X4 M, everything is on the higher level. First, the same 3.0-liter V6 engine receives a different tuning. For the M model, it can produce 475 hp and 445 lb-ft of torque. That is not all, since this SUV is getting another push for “Competition” model, that will deliver 505 horsepower. This is enough for the X4M to stop the clock under 4 seconds when sprints 0-60 mph. An eight-speed M Steptronic is the gearbox and AWD is standard again.
You will recognize the 2020 BMW X4M by its distinctive look. If you can’t find the M badge, then look for the special black grille. Compared to the standard model, this one has a lower position and larger air vents. On the rear end you will find quad exhaust tips. Of course, the X4 M comes with a special set of wheels. Besides standard features, the new model will come with optional equipment, such as 21-inch wheels, or unique spoiler as a part of Carbon package.
2020 X4 Release Date, Competition
The main rival for the 2020 BMW X4 will be the Mercedes GLC. Of course, the German giant will offer a special AMG version to compete with X4M. Besides it, the Audi Q5 is a notable rival, as well as the new Cadillac XT5. Acura RDX and Lexus NX are suffering big changes, so these two will be worth of waiting as alternatives to BMW’s luxury compact crossover SUV. Speaking of release date, the premiere is not set yet. Well, with X4M ready for debut, we believe the standard model could be out soon. There are no too many changes on the base version, so there is no need for waiting. The 2020 BMW X4 will cost the same as before, starting around $50,000. An M40i engine adds $10,000. The M package will cost you over $75,000.
