We expected them as 2020 YM, but Jeep delays the production of Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer for 2021. This decision has sense since the company is clearing up some space in factories. The new Dodge Durango moves to the body-on-frame platform and it will be built in Warren plants. It leaves more room in the current factory, which will be filled with more Grand Cherokees, 2021 Jeep Wagoneer, and Grand Wagoneer.
These two will take place in the full-size segment. Currently, the biggest SUV the FCA is selling is Grand Cherokee. It gets a three-row version, but that doesn’t stop the company from delivering a true big rig. That will be the 2021 Jeep Wagoneer, a rival to Ford Expedition and Chevy Tahoe. On the other hand, 2021 Grand Wagoneer is an extended version, a rival to Expedition MAX and Chevrolet Suburban.
2021 Jeep Wagoneer Spy Photos and Official Announcements
The company promised the 2021 Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer will hit the market soon. However, this “soon” is not defined precisely. At least we know the company is up to something. What’s more, the test mules were spotted, and that warms up rumors about the release date for both SUVs. Heavily covered, vehicles are not unveiling too much. The design remains a mystery, but the spy shots confirm that SUVs are in advanced stages of development. Still, we won’t see them next year for sure.
Release Date
As said, the return of 2021 Jeep Wagoneer and its larger sibling was initially planned for the next year. However, the company never confirmed the release date. It left us with speculations which turned false. Now, the latest rumors are saying the carmaker is about to make a big debut during the next Detroit Auto Show next summer. Both Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer should have a premiere there. The sales will start a few months later, probably in the last quarter of 2020.
2021 Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer Concept
It is very questionable what kind of architecture two new SUVs are going to use. The FCA is moving the production of the new Durango to plants where other body-on-frame models are assembled (Warren). Most full-size SUVs are using the same platform. But, if the production of the 2021 Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer is going to happen in Jefferson North Assembly in Michigan, then some other changes are on the way too. The company will either expand the factory and start building ladder frames there, or the Grand Wagoneer will ride on a unibody concept. Both architectures are possible, with different pros and cons. The only thing we can do is to wait for the official announcement.
Specs
Being a full-size SUV requires big engines. Both 2021 Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer will use one of the V8 units the FCA is already using for its SUVs and trucks. It will be either a 5.7-liter or 6.4-liter mill.
The first one is capable to produce 360 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque. To compete in the same segment where Ford Expedition produces over 400 hp, the Wagoneer will need more power. A 6.4-l can deliver 475 horsepower and 470 lb-ft. We believe both options will be available so the buyers can have more options while buying.
Hellcat Engine
Top of the line Grand Cherokee mid-size SUV is using a 6.2-liter supercharged engine. This so-called Hellcat engine is capable to produce 707-797 horsepower, depending on setup. For the SUV, this number is the lowest. For the segment, this is the most you can get from any sport utility vehicle that didn’t go through an aftermarket upgrade. Fuel consumption is a big issue since you will have to refill the tank pretty often. The cost is not a problem since this version of the 2021 Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer is probably going to cost over $100,000.
Styling
The 2021 Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer will bring no surprises at the front fascia. The seven-slot radiator grille is the sure thing. Designers will have to work to make other parts fresh and not to make these two models just a larger version of the Grand Cherokee. Well, Wagoneer is going to offer more space inside the cabin, for passengers and cargo. The spy photos are unveiling the body boxier than for its smaller sibling. Power liftgate will be standard, as well as the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto services.
Upper trim levels will include an off-road 4×4 Trailhawk edition with performance-tuned suspension. Also, for more premium features, look for the Limited edition. Of course, the FCA is going to deliver even more trim levels. The SRT model for the Grand Wagoneer is going to produce at least 500 horsepower. It will compete with the upcoming Raptor version of the Ford Expedition. The Trackhawk edition is possible, but not so certain. It is more fan’s wish. The price of the new SUV will start around $50,000 and the extended version will cost at least $55,000.
